I've done loans for ministers. The ones I know don't get paid a whole lot.

The 1% exists in Ministry, as well

Many, many local congregations don't pay a whole lot.

But the big business churches give them all a bad name - making hundreds of thousands, if not millions for the "Ministers"

I'm sure the vast majority don't.

I went to my cousin's wedding in June and the minister (youth minister) rolled up in an Audi TT convertible. Maybe his wife has money for all I know, so I'm not going to jump to conclusions. :|

Jon, I think your father was the exception. The minister, pastor, priest gig is pretty easy compared to what we have to go through every day at work.

I see catholic priests all the time in the best restaurant in town for lunch and dinner. They're driving Chevy Tahoe's too.

I can't see where any of the above was an exaggeration, in fat it has been born out in lawsuit after lawsuit. Do you have any facts to prove those statements wrong??
As for any help they provide it is miniscule to the amount of $$$$ taken in. How else do you explain priests riding around in Helicopters and Mercedes?
How many priests do you know personally that ride around in a helicopter or Mercedes? I've never met one.

Really?

I have never seen this...ever.

I haven't read this whole thread but the original statement I do not agree with. Some churches are outspoken in their beliefs.

Besides the gov and the state of MN, my church is where I give my $$ to.

Have you looked?

Go down to your church and ask to see the books. Also, follow your priests around for a while. You see them on Sunday then who knows what the fuck they do.

Report to us what you find.

the priest at the church I used to attend had a BMV that was donated by a rich member. They owned a dealership so all maintenance was free.

So our new pastor really messed up this weekend. Someone forgot to tell him to hand out free swedish fish to all the kids this week. My 9 year old was pissed!

Who cares what pastors and priests ride around in - or - how much they get paid
The people who pay the salaries (The congregation) give willingly from their own pockets
It's them in the congregation that need their heads examined if they keep giving - yet have an issue with the way the money is spent...

otherwise - so what..?

Priests are supposed to live a modest life, like jesus. They aint, so theyre fucking hipocrits and thieves.

They should be turning down the money and directing it to non brainwashing charitable efforts, like planned parenthood.

Damn right I have. Your priests get free room and board, expensive cars and dinners, sabbaticals at gay sex resorts, legal expenses when they get sued for fucking children, and they only work a few hours a week.

Cheese job indeed.

Most priests I know work from 6AM-9PM, 6 days a week. Sundays are probably their easiest days of the week. Though they are not always in the church, many of them are out in the community visiting their parishioners and nursing homes, along with meetings and classes of varying kinds, depending on his specialties and education.

As for what they own, is it immodest or greedy to accept freely offered gifts? It's not as though these guys make millions and hoard away vaults of gold and have huge trust funds. The free room and board is a direct by-product of the Church owning land and building housing for them on it. So they can do with it as they please.

What's the point of hating on these guys? Were you molested? Did you have a child that got molested? Does it make you feel good to hate people you probably don't know all that well? I'm saying that because I've gathered you don't spend much time at Catholic churches. Which confuses me since you seem to know so much about it. Something doesn't quite add up. :?
To me, all this boils to is yet another form of bigotry in society today. It's really not that different from racism, sexism, or any other kind of prejudice that's prevalent today. I realize none of this will change your mind, but I'm putting it out there as food for thought. What you do with it is your problem.

Bullshit, priests don't work those hours.

I hate the church because it's currently involved in a cover up of a massive child sexual abuse scandal.

Why do you love the church? What kind of person just sloughs off the fact their church has been harboring pedophiles for centuries and millions of children, mostly boys, were raped by their priests, bishops, cardinals and popes?

Maybe not...but I doubt you work all day, too. Most priests I know are available and working those hours. Dispute that all you want, I speak from an area of expertise you do not share. For the record, I have never once read any story about the Pope raping anyone. Since there's only one at any given time, I find it highly unlikely that any of the last 3 committed such an act.

I don't slough off child sexual abuse- never once did I say that. Putting words in people's mouths is a pretty lame argument tactic. My justification for supporting Roman Catholicism is simple- I know the core essence of the church's leadership- for every bad apple, there are plenty of good, holy men working within its hierarchy. That, among other reasons is why I still support it and will to the day I die. Not every priest is a bad man. Not every bishop is evil. A dichotomy like that is seldom right, the answer or truth is in the gray.

You can ramble on and lambast the Church for its misdeeds. Every Catholic agrees they are a source of shame for them. What profit do you gain by hammering away at it? You have no more influence in the matter than I do.

That's all I'm going to say on the subject. I am curious to hear if you would still hate the church if you did not know about sexual abuse cases, though.

Good post. No argument. The catholic church does many good deeds.

I put in 133 hours last pay period (two weeks). :coffee:

Would I hate the church? Not too much. I believe organized religion, espcecially the three Abraham-based cults, is dangerous and amoral, so I wouldn't like it.

That being said, I appreciate your thoughts and I will refrain from unprovoked attacks on religion.

Thanks.
