yesterday on the News Hour a reporter on the scene was saying that the Taliban had checkpoints around the airport and were separating locals from foreigners and allowing the foreigners to pass. Makes sense - they have achieved their goal.

That's the colossal screwup here - there are thousands of American citizens still in Afghanistan, most of whom don't want to be there, and there are tens of thousands of Afghans who helped us who want to get out and they aren't out yet either. And there's no seemingly clear plan on how to get them out or even when. I read somewhere that just getting the visas processed for the latter group will take another 2-3 years. I guess on the bright side some of them may not be alive then so that should cut down on the backlog a little bit.

Again, no one is arguing that we should be in Afghanistan, either fighting or trying to prop up a government that the Afghans won't fight for themselves. The argument is over why we fumbled the transition as badly as we did.
