Too soon to know if it is worse or not, but there are still approximately 10,000 Americans trapped in Afghanistan. Many of those were told to shelter in place and not to come to the airport or to the embassy. Abandoned...

This shit is getting worse by the minute. :ohno:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions ... ghanistan/
Several congressional staffers told me that American citizens in Kabul have been flooding their office’s phone lines, complaining that after being told on Sunday by the State Department to shelter in place and not to come to the embassy or the airport, they have not received any further information and are scared for their lives. Cotton’s office set up an email address for Americans in Kabul who want to be evacuated (evac@cotton.senate.gov) to try to get them more help.

“We’ve been screaming at the State Department over this issue,” one senior GOP Senate staffer told me. “This is a s---show everyone saw coming, and they didn’t do a damn thing about it until about 24 hours ago, after days of pounding on them by the Hill.”

There’s no single tally of U.S. citizens in danger in Kabul. President Biden didn’t address the issue of how the U.S. government will assist Americans who aren’t already at the airport during his remarks to the nation Monday afternoon.

An administration official who was not authorized to speak on the record told me that there are an estimated 10,000 U.S. citizens in the country, with the vast majority in or near Kabul. Some are residents, journalists or aid workers who may not want to leave. Most are scrambling to escape. Some are dual nationals or children of Americans who may not have the proper passport or visas, but the State Department has not told them how to fix their paperwork.

The State Department and the Defense Department basically have two options: negotiate safe passage for American citizens with the Taliban, if possible, or send the U.S. military out into the city to bring Americans back to the airport before the Taliban gangs find them. Officials working on these cases inside the government told me they have no clear guidance from the White House and not enough support.

Yep. Biden may have a hostage/execution situation on his hands soon that makes Carter's hostage situation look like a walk in the park.

yesterday on the News Hour a reporter on the scene was saying that the Taliban had checkpoints around the airport and were separating locals from foreigners and allowing the foreigners to pass. Makes sense - they have achieved their goal.

I heard a crushing interview from MSNBC and Brian Williams just before getting to my office. Some CIA guy, Zellen? Anyway, I just did a quick you tube search for it. Shocking, it popped up in the search bar, but nothing really showing the interview.

Anyway 10K US citizens and over 78K Afgan friendlies we know exactly who they are(were) were left behind? How/why did the troops get pulled before they did? And why not fully remove everything at Bagram?

Who gets fired for this? If anyone?

I'm sure kalmy is just waiting for me to make a mistake. But correct me if I'm wrong, didn't Trumps original deal have the US out by 5/1? And the delay was to ensure everything and everyone enough time to get out?

That's the colossal screwup here - there are thousands of American citizens still in Afghanistan, most of whom don't want to be there, and there are tens of thousands of Afghans who helped us who want to get out and they aren't out yet either. And there's no seemingly clear plan on how to get them out or even when. I read somewhere that just getting the visas processed for the latter group will take another 2-3 years. I guess on the bright side some of them may not be alive then so that should cut down on the backlog a little bit. :ohno:

Again, no one is arguing that we should be in Afghanistan, either fighting or trying to prop up a government that the Afghans won't fight for themselves. The argument is over why we fumbled the transition as badly as we did.
