JohnStOnge wrote:I find it weird doing this when I started the thread to sound an optimistic note about electric cars but I guess it's come to it. Here's something on how electric car range declines when temperature is not ideal:

http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/1732 ... ld-weather" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

On the Tesla in particular:
he same thing happened when I drove a Tesla Model S. With the 85 kWh battery, the Tesla is good for around 250 miles. During the afternoon with temperatures above freezing, the discharge rate indicated I wasn’t far off from that kind of efficiency. Driving at night as temperatures fell into the 20s (0C to -5C), I found the range fell noticeably faster than the distance gauge suggested at the start of the trip.
Tesla uses waste heat generated by the electric motor. It’s efficient once there’s waste heat available but that takes time.
One more general article on batteries in general with a relevant quote on electric vehicles at the end:

http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/arti ... mperatures" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Users of electric vehicles need to understand that the driving distance specified per charge is given under normal temperature; frigid cold will sharply reduce the available mileage. Using electricity for cabin heating is not the only cause for the shorter driving distance between charging; the battery performance is reduced when cold.
Here's another tidbit of clarity, John: My 2013 F150 is "rated at 15/20. Guess what, I have NEVER gotten 20, I average about 14.2 and have never gotten higher than 18.5. You know why? Because the temp isn't "ideal", I don't drive 55, it's not perfectly flat, it's windy, sometimes I turn the heater or the AC on, etc., etc. NO vehicle achieves it's "rated" mileage. Your revelation about the Tesla isn't exactly earthshattering.

But at the end of the day, my truck spends 9 hours per day parked at my work garage (where it could be plugged in) and about 14 hours per day in my garage at home (where it could be plugged in). My commute is 17 miles each way. On the weekends I put an average of maybe 200 miles on the truck, and (as I said in an earlier post) there is only ONE trip I've taken in the past year where I couldn't have taken a Tesla and been just fine (and in reality, THAT was because I needed to tow something).

I've done the math, and the 5 year cost of ownership of my F150 is about $67,500. The 5 year cost of ownership of a Tesla is about $63,600 (with the $7500 tax credit). So in reality, Tesla has ALREADY reached the price point where it makes financial sense to consider one, and they've reached the "range" point where it's virtually a non-issue for 95% of the drivers and miles driven.

I don't know...I'd have to see the 3 naked women that Z was talking about before I passed judgment on what looks best in a car of that type. I think Z wins if they were three 7s. :nod:

With respect to the quote below: As I said, you think a Tesla makes sense for you. And that's fine. I think everything in your quote below until you get to the part about "..they've reached the "range" point where it's virtually a non-issue for 95% of the drivers and miles driven."

No way on that one.

And the difference between your Ford F150 and a Tesla is that, regardless of the circumstances, you are going to be able to find somewhere to fully "recharge" your Ford 150 in less than five minutes. That may not matter to you if you're confident that you're always going to have 10 hours or so to charge your vehicle while you're doing other things. But I think that if that's the case you are the exception rather than the rule.

Tesla is dead in the water...sell your shares now.

Any time you go up against George Clooney or Vince Megna, you lose.

http://money.msn.com/business-news/arti ... d=17506062" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"Wisconsin's self-proclaimed "lemon law king" filed a lawsuit Monday against direct-order car maker Tesla Motors, accusing the company of refusing to give a Franklin doctor a refund on a defective electric sedan that cost nearly $100,000.

Attorney Vince Megna filed the Wisconsin lawsuit in Milwaukee County Circuit Court. He said he believes the lawsuit is the first lemon law claim against Tesla anywhere in the country.

Megna, who has posted a number of online videos lampooning Republican Gov. Scott Walker, put one up on YouTube on playing up the lawsuit. It shows him in a garage with the Tesla holding a power cord and complaining about how the battery won't charge.

"My four-slicer works," he says. "Why won't this one?"

In another scene, Megna is driving down the road when he sees a cardboard cutout of actor George Clooney in an intersection. He stops, gets out and starts having a conversation with it, inviting it to come to the courthouse with him. Clooney was one of the first 100 people to purchase a Tesla in 2006; last year he complained his Tesla Roadster always left him stuck along the side of the road.

Megna is later shown lugging the cutout through the courthouse's metal detectors. As he climbs the stairs to the main corridor, he mentions he won't let his paralegal talk about the case because Tesla requires customers to sign a confidentiality agreement when they purchase the cars. The camera then pans to a woman with her mouth duct-taped shut who hands Megna a copy of the lawsuit."

Countdown to Tesla's demise starts now.

Tesla may not survive the lawyers, but the product will be made. :coffee:
Espandexthongman doesn't think so. :coffee:
These signatures have a 500 character limit?

What if I have more personalities than that?

Tesla's $35K car comes out next year, as does its SUV (which already has 12,000 reservations). I think both, especially the former, will be game changers. The Model S already outsold Mercedes, BMW, and Lexus last year in its vehicle class, so an entry-level luxury car will definitely bring more people to their showrooms.

I know I live in NoVA, but Teslas are in demand here. A Tesla in the Mid-west, South, or Big Sky country might not make sense (at least now), but people are snatching them up in the Northeast, Cali, and East/West Coasts (bias). As already proven, the market is there.

Plus we should be rooting for Tesla. It's an American company...representing American ingenuity...building cars in America...named after a great American. What the hell is there not to like?
