Well excuse the **** me for suggesting a pragmatic, "the world needs ditch diggers too", conservative idea.

BTW JSO...I mean Ganny :) , it's the second time in two days I've had to remind someone that Orwell was a democratic socialist.
Dude, the adjective "Orwellian" does not in any way imply that was George Orwell's personal politics or beliefs. Rather, it's an adjective used to describe, and I quote,
of, pertaining to, characteristic of, or resembling the literary work of George Orwell or the totalitarian future described in his antiutopian novel 1984 (1949).
That's how I used it. I'm quite sure that the totalitarian state he described in his works is not something that he advocated, but that's not what the adjective means. Try to keep up. :thumb:

Ok, Captain Hyperbole. I know what Orwellian means and your use of it to describe my idea was a misuse of the term. Don't worry, it happens quite often.

People "determine what they pursue in life". But they also have to prove their worth and earn it.

I'm not really sure you understand at all what Orwell was driving at much less the context of this discussion.

But I'll try and keep up for ya.

So is that the message board equivalent of punting the ball away on third down? I still fail to see how your plan in any way has any credible way to actually happen, let alone deliver results that are substantially different than today. Didn't read this thread, but didn't feel the need to start a new one.

UD is thumping its chest because it only increased tuition by 1.9%, the lowest increase in 30 years. :jack:

So, doing the quick math from the below chart, if they keep this super low bargain annual increase in effect for the next eight years until my sons start college, it'll only cost me about $250,000 to send my boys to school in-state. :wall:

Ok so he wasn't perfect. 1984 is still a good story.

As I said earlier: The higher education model needs to be revisited. People need to step back and start with a blank slate. They need to identify what they want higher education to accomplish and think about what is needed to accomplish it while completely ignoring the current system and see what they come up with. It's likely that a lot of sacred cows need to be slain as the higher education establishment has pretty much gone along for years with no external accountability.

I strongly suspect it's possible to prepare people to function well in their chosen fields at much lower cost than that associated with our current higher education system.

College tuition is out of control and there is but one thing to blame

Scads of government money

If college tuition truly reflected market value and what people are truly able to pay it would be less than 1/4 what it is today

There would also be exponentially fewer useless majors, such as women's studies and art therapy

Standby for someone here to argue that this isn't true - the same kind of someone who would decry the cost of government contracts and 500 dollar hammers

What kind of father are you anyway? You'd pay through the nose to send them in-state when they could get a better education from real professors for free in Europe? And learn another language to boot? Your children hate you already. :ohno:

At $42k per year for out of state tuition, it's a foregone conclusion that my kids won't carrying on the Blue Hen legacy, chemical engineering or not.

We spend more than the socialists for worse results.
But some much these costs are driven by the low end of U.S. higher ed, the colleges that are functionally dropout factories. Unlike, say, Germany with its renowned apprenticeship systems, there aren't really great alternatives to college if you want a middle-class life in the United States. So ill-prepared young adults flood into degree programs they never finish, leaving the U.S. with some of the lowest completion rates in the developed world.

In other words, what makes this chart truly galling isn't that we're spending extraordinary amounts of money to produce college graduates. It's that we're spending extraordinary amounts of money to produce college dropouts.

How come it OK to capitalize your ideas and resources, but not OK to capitalize your labor? :?

Yeah they do. In few countries all tuition is free. Even for those outside the EU.

With the exception of the US, countries want a smart workforce and understand that it is an investment in their people. US bidniz hasn't reached that level yet.

I'm willing to bet these countries aren't sending 18-year-olds with a 4th grade reading levels to college and don't have seats at colleges for literally anyone with a pulse.

True, but like the article said, they also have better options for people who are smart (enough) and capable but aren't necessarily the book-learnin' type.

But since we don't, the answer is to send them to Harvard.
