"Independent" Ranchers take $1 Billion in disaster relief
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says farmers and ranchers who suffered heavy livestock and grazing losses due to extreme weather in the past three years have been quick to take advantage of newly available disaster relief funds.
The agency said in a progress report released Wednesday that it has distributed more than $1 billion in relief funds - a little less than half the overall amount predicted in the recently passed farm bill - in just over three months.
The USDA says it has processed and delivered more than 106,000 payments to farmers in 40 states as of July 2.
The agency estimates it will spend $2.5 billion overall on disaster relief cases from 2011 to 2014.

Shocking. Give Americans a trough, and then expect them NOT to put their snout in it.

Unfortunately this kind of thing is, I think, common. It's kind of like what happened with commercial fishermen in association with the Deepwater Horizon thing. Commercial fishermen are notorious for evading taxes. In fact, State and Federal fishery management agencies have for years designed their landings data acquisition strategies so as to account for that. If there are too few fishermen and/or processors involved in a fishery in a State, the landings won't be reported. The reason is that fishery managers want people to be honest about how much they catch and they don't want to have people fearing that the IRS will be able to figure out that something is up.
So then there was the BP thing and fishermen who wanted to be compensated had to show the extent of their losses from all the fishery closures. But all this time they'd been low balling in order to avoid paying taxes. You get the picture.

SS- a good idea that has been raided repeatedly by the government.
Unemployment- again much needed but 2 years is way to long and discourages looking for work.
Welfare- everyone goes through rough times. But it is not meant as a birth to grave thing. I experience this on a weekly basis. Fuckers load up three carts overflowing at the grocery store and are shocked that only 40% is acceptable. And then bitch about it. But the see them loading into an 12 Escaldade as I get into my 02 s10.

Is there anyone here besides maybe Tman and Bronco that might be against all forms of welfare, unemployment and SS? I can't tell if you're serious or just fishing.dbackjon wrote:Puts ASU and Andy in favor of welfare, unemployment benefits, Social Security, etc.

When needed, yes. What's wrong with that? I pay into the system my whole life and if I need it briefly in the case of welfare or unemployment it's there for me. I'm not in favor of making it a way of life like the libs do. With SS, I'm not even factoring that into my retirement plans. It's a ponzi scheme that I may get some benefit from in the future, but we'll see.dbackjon wrote:andy7171 wrote: This.

I'm certainly not in favor of making it a "way of life". I'd much rather see economic policies that foster a thriving middle class, so people who bust their ass and do their best don't need public assistance to get by. When the nation's largest private employer hands out food stamp applications to its new hires, something ain't right.ASUG8 wrote:When needed, yes. What's wrong with that? About as "right" as the U.S. government ADVERTISING and ENCOURAGING people to sign up for food stamps and other forms of public assistance....or go on SS disability.Grizalltheway wrote:I'm certainly not in favor of making it a "way of life". Re: "Independent" Ranchers take $1 Billion in disaster relie
Crop Insurance came out the big winner in the latest Farm Bill, where funding goes towards crop insurance it is being diverted away from the "direct payments" method of distributing farm subsidies. Crop Insurance of course demands a premium, and that premium is what is partially subsidized, lowering the cost of true risk management. But Crop Insurance only covers program crops. The huge livestock losses from last October's early storm (the one that got me) out in South Dakota and Nebraska would not have coverage under the Crop Insurance Program, disaster payments would be used for this type of loss.kalm wrote:Don't the farmers already have federally subsidized crop insurance?

As far as the douche nozzle down in New Mexico, he is simply ranging his cattle on public lands without a lease, or without paying for the lease. His cattle should be declared public property for any and all to harvest.
Fat cat ranchers and corporate interests hold the lions share of the great grazing leases in my state, and their angus is fattening up on that outstanding green forage right now, difference is here, those fat cats pay for their leases, no matter how disgustingly low that rate is.
Can't tell me $2.50 per AUM is a just rate, but that is what it is.
