I had heard how wrong Krugman was in the past and finally read a few articles-wow. I liked the part where it was explained away as being an administrative error made by a low level employee. Hmmm, a low level employee who has the ability to authorize $8500 bonuses?andy7171 wrote:Pathetic.

Yes, he's capable of being wrong. But he also was predicting the housing bubble and a recession along with Nouriel Rabini a few years before it happened while free market geniuses like Alan Greenspan were taken by surprise.SeattleGriz wrote:I had heard how wrong Krugman was in the past and finally read a few articles-wow. Win some, you lose some in economics, but Krugman's correct about many things.

Stated income loans, ARM's, $0 down financing, interest only loans...yeah only a select few saw it coming. We should all bow down to Krugman's clairvoyance.kalm wrote:Yes, he's capable of being wrong. Remember, this is the same clown who said the internet would have little effect on commerce or the economy...no greater impact than a fax machine.

Ah yes the Keynesians.
A LOT of people identified the housing bubble- it really wasnt that esoteric of an issue to figure out.
But yeah, Krugman was one of that group (albeit not the first)

Here's a couple of testimonies defending the VA a bit. I have a good friend who just started working at the VA after a 15 years in the private sector. I'll get her take this weekend and report back.

Re: Veterans Affairs "Scandal"
This surprises no one who works for the federal government. Hell, it's taking me the better part of two years to get my major project through all the levels of approval, over and over on the various stages of my acquisition, to move it to award. And this is not even a major systems acquisition. It's for professional services; namely analysis. The red tape is not what you might imagine. It is worse.kalm wrote:Here's a couple of testimonies defending the VA a bit. I have a good friend who just started working at the VA after a 15 years in the private sector. Re: Veterans Affairs "Scandal"
Interesting back and forth here.
But even if O'Reilly is right, Obama has had 5 years to fix these problems.
http://www.politico.com/story/2014/05/k ... 06986.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Bill O’Reilly took on Karl Rove over the management of the Department of Veterans Affairs during the Bush administration.
“The problems existed on the day President Bush left office,” the Fox News host said to Rove, who was a White House aide to President George W. Bush, on Wednesday evening.
He cited a 2008 report issued by VA to the Obama-Biden presidential transition team that said waiting times at the department were too long and threatened veterans’ access to health care. The report, obtained by CBS News, said, “the problems and causes associated with scheduled, waiting times and waiting lists are systemic.”
Rove responded that Bush doubled the size of the VA budget to invest in modernizing the department and succeeded in decreasing wait times.
“Because President Bush involved the nation in two very intense wars, he had to upgrade the VA facilities. Everybody knows that,” O’Reilly replied, referring to the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Rove said later that the 2008 report was written by people assigned by the Obama team and that they were “probably Democrats.”
“You’re wrong,” O’Reilly said, as the two talked over each other. “This came from VA officials,” he added.
But even if O'Reilly is right, Obama has had 5 years to fix these problems.

Re: Veterans Affairs "Scandal"
So I talked to my friend, and she is very impressed with the professionalism and dedication of the care providers and administration at her hospital so far. The operation appears to be efficient but they are absolutely slammed and probably need more help.kalm wrote:Here's a couple of testimonies defending the VA a bit. Then there's the type of patients they see. She had one this last week who was in his 50's, was diabetic, and had an alcohol and meth problem. He's suffering, would not make eye contact and at one point uttered that he just wanted God to take away his breath.
We cut taxes while fighting two wars and last February, a bill to increase VA funding was voted down over politics.

We cut taxes while fighting two wars and last February, a bill to increase VA funding was voted down over politics.
As usual, Reid didn't allow Republicans to introduce amendments to the bill and Bernie Sanders tried to attach a provision that allowed vets who were hurt or injured in the private sector to claim VA disability benefits.
The VA's problems are systemic and throwing more money at them isn't going to fix it.
