Good job Obama. :thumb:
You may have just come up with the solution. Turn the area into a hazardous waste dump. No need to guard the border in the area because you go through and you will die. We've got a place for our hazardous waste, no illegal immigration in the area, and no money spent patrolling the border. Everybody wins!

"Only Congress can declare a national park, which stops most land uses. But under the 1906 Antiquities Act the president has the power to declare national monuments, which offer heightened environmental protections.
The New Mexico monument is Mr. Obama’s second designation this year. In March, he added 1,600 acres in the Point Arena-Stornetta region to the California Coastal National Monument established by President Clinton in 2000. House Republicans said the action wasn’t necessary because they had passed similar legislation that was awaiting Senate action.

About half the Organ Mountains monument will be designated as wilderness, the highest level of protection, closing it to motorized vehicles and human construction.

I look at it like the rain forests in Brazil. Every year the amount available gets smaller and small. Once it's gone, it's gone for good....

Deciding upon which areas should be set aside is open for discussion but IMO we need to set aside as much as we possibly can. PERIOD!
We already have plenty of parkland. And the govt already owns almost 35% of the land in the country, which is plenty.

I think Detroit, and many parts of Chicago, should be plowed down and made into protected wilderness parks. And then we need to tell those hippie protesters that they shouldn't pee and crap in our parks...it is ruining the standard of living for the rest of us.

Let's see...declaring someone's land as federal protected wilderness will increase their standard of living more so than if they owned it??? :suspicious:

Plenty for now maybe...but once it's gone it's gone for good. I'm thinking of our children and our childerns children...Plus, I'm leaving out BLM land and mainly confining my comment towards parks and wilderness areas that are not supposed to be changed by "humans". BLM is a big question mark even in my own mind.

This article is wrong - Obama can recommend wilderness protection, and the BLM can put some regs in place, but it is not a true wilderness area until CONGRESS designates it:

When Congress designates each wilderness area, it includes a very specific boundary line—in statutory law. Once a wilderness area has been added to the System, its protection and boundary can only be altered by another act of Congress. That places a heavy burden on anyone who, all through the future, may propose some change.

Yeah, that is why the GOP has consistenly underfunded the NPS, has proposed privatizing it, etc.

So any Wilderness Area that the monument includes was ALREADY wilderness area, passed in 2010 by CONGRESS.

This adds NO NEW WILDERNESS AREAS.

If a monument is built in a wilderness area, will anyone see it?

So unless there are helicopter tours, Flaggy won't see anything.

Helicopter tours are cool. :thumb: Wait. Do they have air conditioning? :?

I saw Mt. Rushmore today in an episode of Pawn Stars when they went to Sturgis.
Now I can check that off my list of places to see. :thumb:
