You know damn well it is going to happen. We are already so far down that road in our collective groupthink (although not as far as Europe but we're working on it)....

Think about it- in most of western Europe you can go to jail for saying the Holocaust didn't happen. It is a repugnant thing to say and therefore it is illegal. If Germany was in charge of the Internet, do you think it would be possible to say repugnant things there? Then it is only a short hop to the censure of other positions considered to be repugnant by some-

I dont think gays should marry

I do think gays should marry

I dont think abortion should be legal

I do think abortion should be legal

I don't think climate change is caused by humans

I do think climate change is caused by humans

I'll bet you a paycheck it is going to happen I am that sure of it.

I'm less worried about the lack of bandwidth scam. Once the truth of it becomes viral and somebody figures out a way to make money while putting everybody else out of business with slightly faster internetz we'll see a bandwidth war. The government just needs to stay out of the way
It would be wisest to mistrust BOTH big government and big business when it comes to limiting competition and increasing control. Especially when the two are in bed together.

Monopolies are created by government. Other than DeBeers and the NYSE, name me one monopoly that lasted any significant time and didn't crumble under the pressure of increased competition.

Classifying the most technologically advanced and sophisticated network as a "common carrier" and submit it to the rules and regulations of an antiquated piece of legislation will do to the internet what "common carrier" status did to the electrical grid, public water systems, and landline phone systems...destroy innovation and investment.
Here's a nice, succinct summary of the issue. Read it and get back to me….

So as I look at this I get it and agree, theoretically fiber can be made to transmit more and more data if you multiplex the signal enough times to some certain speed. I am not sure what that is, but there is some physical maximum. Right now your optics are what are holding us back and they are not cheap.

I am not a proponent for or against net neutrality at this point. I don't know where it is going yet but I see why it is being discussed. It doesn't matter if you have a 1GB fiber connection in your house to the internet, you are still going to have to prioritize and QOS your traffic to make it do what you want it to do. 8 lane freeways still get clogged and more cars are getting through it than a 1 lane road but it is still congested and you have to let your police and ambulance through. :twocents:

true dat ^
In areas like Montana Wyoming Utah Colorado New Mexico
The states are huge land masses with pockets of population
In these scenarios the amount of fiber in out of the way non-college towns tends to be on the "less than optimal" side of things... as you said the HUB''s and optics transmission side is expensive to build-out

But in Seattle (for example)
On the Microsoft campus amongst some 35 thousand employees all connected at the same time the speeds are STAGGERING to observe in the +100mbs speeds

and my service here in Redmond is capped at 50mbs but I know damn well it would naturally settle out around 100mbs and up

But to your point - assigning QOS and packet priority is good and necessary if done in as neutral a manner as possible

Meh... nope I was in Broadband (High Speed Data)
Actually not to tire you guys but how I got to Scientific-Atlanta was through an acquisition
Scientific-Atlanta purchased Barco.Net (the Broad Band Division) of a Belgian company

I was a Barco Network U.S. Employee
Me and 7 other guys were busy kicking Scientific-Atlanta's ass in Broadband Networking all over the U.S. market to the point that Scientific-Atlanta had to buy us...

Then a few years after Scientific-Atlanta purchased us we were kicking the sh!t out of Cisco so badly
Cisco purchased us... I went through 2 stock buy-outs in about 6 years

Good Times my friend
