A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Moon...

I already answered the moon thing in a different thread when ES asked the SAME FUCKING QUESTION with the SAME FUCKING PICTURE. So I'll just quote it:

It's scary when beer commercials get the size of the Earth compared to the Moon more accurate than NASA's staged photos.

Well, let's figure this out the hard and easy ways. First the hard:

The Moon is 238855 miles away from the Earth and the Earth has a diameter of 7926 miles. The formula for angular size is "57 x (size/distance)," which in this case gets us 1.9. So the Earth takes up approximately 2 degrees of the Moon's sky...which is much less than the picture above and exactly like the picture William Anders took.

If we did this the other way (Moon from Earth), we'd get an angular size of 0.5. So the Moon takes up approximately 0.5 degrees of the Earth's sky, which is something you can estimate with the naked eye if you're really good with eyeing angles.

But now, let's figure this out the easy way:

Because the diameter of Earth is 4x bigger than the Moon, the Earth will look 4x bigger than the Moon does from Earth. Considering the Moon doesn't take up that much space in the night sky, it's really not that hard to figure out that the Earth will not look that big in Moon's sky.

Oh hey, look at that! The angular size of the Moon from Earth is 0.5 and the angular size of the Earth from the Moon is 1.9...which is roughly 4x bigger than 0.5! Say what?!
