Virginia State Police say state Sen. Creigh Deeds is in serious condition after being assaulted by his son in his Bath County home Tuesday morning.
Democratic sources tell News4 that Deeds' son Austin "Gus" Deeds attacked his father Tuesday morning before turning a gun on himself. Police say Gus Deeds died at the scene.
Virginia State Police were called to Deeds' home at 7:25 a.m., and the senator was flown to UVA Hospital in Charlottesville. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Creigh Deeds, a Democrat, has been a Virginia state senator since 2001, representing district 25 northeast of Richmond, which includes Charlottesville and several counties. He served in the House of Delegates for 10 years prior, and ran unsuccessfully for attorney general of Virginia in 2005 and governor in 2009.
The same year his father ran for governor, a then 20-year-old Gus Deeds was arrested in Bath County for alcohol possession, according to the Virginian Pilot.
