If that's the case, no more whining by the companies, they need to provide their own training. Otherwise, as I have witnessed in the giant organizations I've worked for, they'll put a gun to the head of state governments to pay for their training, thus threatening the state that they will be leaving.

Worked for a 5 billion/yr food company which did just that in a southwestern state. Built a new plant, then, despite ungodly earnings, had the balls to ask the state to pay for training its new employees. This, after the state had spent $1 million for several job fairs to staff the place. They threatened to pull up stakes and leave if they did not get it, too. It's corporate welfare...for the wealthy!

You want good employees to learn your company's skills, train them yourself!

Don't agree and your state will look like Detroit. It's a tough position to be in.
Not my state, Simba.

Corporate welfare.

The root of this problem lies with government. Our education system is pretty bad, especially middle school through high school.

As a society we've also become soft and complacant being the lone superpower in the world. You'd think China's rise would light a fire under our asses, but I just don't think people care.

Agree. One thing I agree with the conks on is the evil influence of Hollywood, fashion, cell phone and the video game industry on youth. We're producing millions of soft, complacent and stupid assholes. Glad I will be dead when those fuckheads have the wheel.

I have mixed feelings on this. I'm fortunate to live in an area with great public schools so I'm somewhat sheltered from much of the country where that may not be the case. However, I think the root of the problem lies with a generation of parents who suck.

It's the parents, Hen. You are correct.

If anyone would take a step back and see how schools really bend over backwards to make students successful, they'd realize that many kids just don't show up ready to learn. That could be a function of a lot of things, but this guy thinks it's lazy parenting.

And it ain't a Conk or Donk issue anymore. I used to think that it had largely to do with Conks who had taken over school boards for the expressed purpose of cutting spending, but that's not it now.

I'm in agreement with the parents being the blame. Kids will only, generally, do what they have to do and if parents don't set the expectations high enough kids will learn to just do what they have to. Parents need to make education a priority for their kids, and then they need to stay on top of things to make sure the school is providing the appropirate level of education for their child. We run into problems when parents don't make school enough of a priority and when they just blindly assume their kid is being properly educated. Make it important and stay tuned into it and it's amazing how kids learn good habits they keep with them later.

That's because most college grads are Liberals who chose to study Dance and Shakespearean Writing classes.

No skill set...just opinions formed by other liberal professors. And training them? No way...committing to a job, being "oppressed" by rules, work hours, and regulations within the corporate environment, simply does not compute.

Turn in your Donk card for not blaming lack of funding.

But in all seriousness, you are right. All you have to do is go to South Korea to get a major educational culture shock. The government is cracking down on kids receiving instruction outside their homes late in the evening. Parents are demanding their kids start learning English sooner. Contrast that to America where a teacher will get blamed if little Johnny doesn't pass his spelling test.

This thread ought to be titled 13.6, because that is the real unemployment rate, the U6. It went from 13.7% in Aug to 13.6%.

Good luck.

There just are too many people out there that aren't qualified or motivated to work most of the available jobs in this country today.

Ha! If there are so many unemployable people that make up the 7.2 number, what percentage of the other 6.4 or 6.5% that you're bringing up would be considered unemployable? Pay attention to the premise of the thread. :coffee: :coffee:
