Compromise

Post by kalm »

Interesting piece on Republican compromise as seen from one congressional district in Utah. I thought the gerrmandered district affect made some sense too.

Would you like to see more compromise?

No doubt gerrymandered districts have greatly impacted the House. Both sides, Dems and GOP, have so many safe districts where they could have a dog run for election and they'll win as long as they have a "D" or "R" next to their name, that the number of actually competitive districts every two years, out of 435, is something like 20-50. So the other 400 districts aren't going to change.

And then there's the echo room effect. Partisans on both sides never even listen to the other side anymore - Dems listen to MSNBC and GOP listens to Fox, and even when they watch the other station it's merely to pick up sound bites and screenshots to mock the other side on message boards or other social media. So Dems all think that the GOP is just filled with old, white, racist, misogynist survivalists and the GOP thinks Dems are just filled with ethnic, poverty-level, uneducated entitlement grabbers.

Obama can complain all he wants about the intransigent House Republicans, but he's done nothing through his campaigning or administration to bring a more sane approach to party interactions between the Dems and GOP. He worked very hard to demonize the GOP in both elections, why should he be surprised that they'll be resistant to work with him or even for him afterwards. Of course, he's just practicing the type of politics that govern both parties today, but when you keep doing the same thing why should we be surprised that the result is the same.

I watch more MSNBC than I do Fox. It helps remind me why I hate the economic viewpoints of liberals.

The only reason I'd like to see "compromise" is strategic "retreat." The Republicans, in general, are the only real impediment to the Democratic Party. And the Democratic Party has been gleefully engaged in destroying this country for the past 80 years or so.

So I want to see the Republican Party stay alive enough to remain an impediment. Right now, for example, it's important that the Republican Party at least maintain the majority in the House in the next election. So, to me, they need to think about how what they do impacts that potential. If they see that, regardless of who is really right and who is really wrong, they need to swallow hard and concede in order to keep the Democrats from having total control of both the Presidency and Congress. So it was in the last confrontation about taxes.

The Republicans need to pick their battles carefully.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?
