I look at the pre tax amount:
0-10+% for horrible service (and thats extremely rare)
15% for subpar service
18% for avg
20+% for good
25+% for outstanding service or if the server left something off the bill
and always round up....

Often when I'm eating out or the gf and I we for drink we sometimes just get water. So say we have a meal where we just have water to drink, and the bill is $45, but bill would have been about $50 if had gotten sodas/tea with refills or I'd gotten a beer. I'll factor that in & tip like the bill was $50.

This is exactly what I do as well. I think servers in Iowa make something like 4.35. I don't have a problem with no tip on top of the 18%,in this case. It's the note with it I have issues with

Utter horseshit. The tip is FOR exceptional service. I tip VERY well for good service, but I'll be damned if I'll ever feel a tip is a "given".

Reverse utter horseshit! The tip is to "To Insure Prompt Service." But it's become a part of the servers minimum wage in many cases. I'm quite certain you're anti minimum wage so I can see why this bothers and confuses you.

Besides, how much of the time is poor service solely the fault of the server? Did it ever occur to you that the meal was late because the cooks were behind. Or perhaps the place was short staffed that evening causing your server to be forgetful or slower than expected?

If a server is rude, I can see under-tipping or leaving no tip at all in rare cases. But there's too many other variables to take a chance on the other stuff.

I take the Vincent Antonelli approach and never look back. Then again, I'm not a conk tight-wad like you and Pwns.

I don't give a flying vertica fuck WHAT it "stands" for. It REPRESENTS good service. When they start automatically adding it in (like in the Bahamas) or start EXPECTING it regardless of service, it's kind of lost it's incentive, donchathink? But it's irrelevant anyway. If I get crappy service (or food) more than once at a place I don't go back anyway. Too many choices out there to pay 18% for shitty food or rude service.

Go to the Bahamas and see how long it takes you to get a menu, a glass of water, and your food served to you. Why? Because no matter HOW shitty the service, they STILL get 15%.

Hey, another rare instance where you and I agree on something.

Due to worries of credit card compromise (I'm pretty sure I had mine compromised at a restaurant once by a waiter with a skimmer) I don't like to let credit cards out of my site, so I usually pay by cash.

In the rare occasions I do pay by credit card I make the tip amount an even dollar amount since I imagine that is preferable.

When paying by cash though I usually have the total as an even dollar amount, which means the tip amount isn't a nice even dollar amount. But since I'm rounding up to the next dollar, that gives a little extra change to make up for that.

It wasn't automatically added it. It was automatically CALCULATED, and then there was a blank for ADDITIONAL tip, and then the patron was to total it all up manually.

Exactly. She left no additional tip and crossed out the 18% amount. It was her intent to only pay the amount of the bill, with no tip at all.

She probably got the bill and saw that she had to add two numbers to get the amount due. She realized that adding two numbers wasn't part of her "skill set" and decided to make the second number zero. Blaming God was just a lame cop out.
