Have you read how a couple of scientists are speculating that solar neutrinos are actually changing the rate of decay? The rate of decay is supposed to be constant.
Thank you. I had not seen your post before I wrote my last long one. But that's exactly the kind of thing I was talking about in saying we assume the rate of decay is constant over a time frame like 60,000 years and we have not empirically confirmed that the assumption is true.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

I'm an engineer. I make science relevant.
An engineer is a scientist. I often wonder why people say things like "scientists and engineers." It should be something like "scientists including engineers."

Some engineers are applied scientists. Maybe most. Some engage in research. But they are all scientists.

Carbon dating has been PROVEN to be as accurate as the quality of the sample...
Good sample / Accurate Date = every time
Every time within the time frame for which we're able to do that. Once you get beyond the time frame of precisely recorded history we can't do that. And that's not a very long time frame in the grand scheme of things.

In the example I read, it only changed the rate by 1%, which hardly brings the consensus of the Earth's age down to 6,000 years, but it does make me wonder if there are other factors that we don't know about that may also change the rate of decay.

I really thought this part of the quote was interesting.
"So, we are saying something that doesn't interact with anything is changing something that can't be changed. Either neutrinos are affecting decay rate or perhaps an unknown particle is."

I got the point of the thread and don't agree with the, "Earth is six thousand years old" belief. I actually don't concern myself with how old the Earth is because it doesn't change anything for me.

Chizzang - I understand your amazement at the Congessman's remarks. My advice - get used to it.
Polarization and gerrymandering = more districts (red and blue) where candidates needn't worry about moderates to win or retain seats = more wackos on both sides,
and I don't see any light at the end of that tunnel.
