In the WWII era, there was a general consensus that we needed to be fighting to save the world as we knew it. That definitely changed with Vietnam, and later Iraq, but it doesn't change the fact that our military prowess is still a large part of our national identity.

In your (minority) opinion.
Now children!

You're both right - We do glorify war but is it really any different than it was 20, 50 or 100 years ago? Kids have been playing with toy guns, physical or virtual, almost since they were invented. Did you play cowboys & indians when you were a kid? Did you have pretend sword fights?

Thanks to television, we also probably understand the impact of war better but we've also grown somewhat desensitized to that impact if it doesn't directly affect us
Being wrong about a topic is called post partisanism - kalm

MAQA - putting the Q into qrazy qanon qult qonspiracy theories since 2015.

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

Thank you for your attention to this matter - UNI88

This country is a WAR MACHINE
We have over 800 military bases that aren't even on our soil
The next closest country has something like 6

If we cut our military spending in HALF
We'd still be spending more than China, Russia, France and the UK combined.!!!

Question:
How does a nation of FREE educated people build up to such an arsenal without the glorification of the product and the selling of the idea?

I just don't picture 89 popping a cap into someone because he felt disrespected.

Wait, you didn't mean that kind of minority.

All someone needs to do is watch the evening news and they'll understand how we are facinated with violence...not just war. The news show stories about dirtbags and losers far more than stories about successes.

People tend to focus and glorify failure and sensationalism instead of hard work and success. It really is pathetic.

IMO, yes and it's not even close. WWI and WWII were HUGELY glorified. We still make movies to this day glorifying those wars. That changed with the Korean War, so much so that many people couldn't even call it a "war". Whether it was because we as a nation got tired of war, got confused as to who we were fighting or why we involved, or simply because people's opinion of war changed... it most definitely changed.

I think I see the problem in this thread. I think there's a HUGE difference between "glorify and celebrate" and "comfort and sensationalize". What I see today is that people like having a large military with cool weapons because it makes them feel safe. We have games like COD (I do play it) and violence on TV because we have become immune to games and stories that don't have blood and guts spewing all over the place.

This happened because of TV. No more War Dept. to tell the networks what or what not to show. The only people who push for war are the ones who will not figh in them. ie. Mr. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Dick Cheney

The same people who want the over priced F-22. Our F- 15's, 16's and 18's will out fly and fight any fighter that China or Russia has to date.

America hasn't been at war since 1945.

Our military has been at war from time to time, but America has been at the mall.

LOL are you serious? Including Clinton and Obama with Limbaugh Hannity and Cheney? So a liberal point of view vs. a neoconservative point of view? If anyone, you should have included Bush Jr.

The key to Dick Cheney is this
Were there EVER a Liberal who deferred once (never mind 5 times) he could not so much as get elected to an office in some liberal backwater California podunk - for he would be Rail Roaded by the Conservatives into complete humiliation

Yet: Dick Cheney draft dodged 5 times and is regarded as a hero by the military and the war Hawk Republican Party - frankly I find that astounding - talk about your cognitive dissonance right there

Yeeesh

Go back and read what my comment was in response to. Or are you saying Obama (Nobel peace prize winner) didn't expand and continue the war? :coffee:
