My guess is that he doesn't appeal to special interests.

Let's shatter a great myth that seems to permeate right now...

Winning debates DOES NOT mean you WIN ELECTIONS they are two very different things. For the Republicans - the biggest mistake they are making right now is getting giddy about Newt for what seems to be the sole desire to see him "stick it" to Obama in the debates... even if he does... it won't change a damn thing... he's unappealing as all hell to the vast majority of voters who don't share their visceral and beyond reason loathing of Obama. (Sound like Dems and Bush in 04? you bet your ass it does.)

As to Paul,
the GOP still has a HUGE portion of the party base locked up in evangelical Christians - who will NEVER let someone like Paul - with his support of gay rights and abortion - be their parties standard bearer.

There is another large faction in the GOP comprised of people who despise Paul's foreign policy stances (which harken back to the before the 50's in the GOP). The neocon right and the militarists will NEVER join him.

He loses 50+% of the GOP base right off the top. Meaning it's awful damn tough to win primaries... which might explain why he's NEVER won any...

If somehow he managed to get the nomination... he'd be slaughtered worse than the entire rest of their field... I mean like he could end up in Mondale country... because I promise you the Christianists would put up third party candidate.

Good analysis, but don't you think the christian right has equal problems with a mormon and a philanderer?

Mormon yes (hence the "anyone but Romney" sweepstakes that this race has become) philanderer - no...

Bush was a better debator against Gore and Kerry. JFK was better against Nixon. Obama was better than McCain. Lincoln was better than Douglas. Biden was better than Palin.

So Jesus can forgive cheaters, just not mormons.

The other part about this election is that (and I acknowledge that every election year is different) we are facing economic circumstances and a crisis phase in history that we haven't experienced in quite some time. So perhaps all bets are off?

eh... no. Voters may be inclined to "go farther" in one extreme or another... but they won't really go too far...

Bush was awful - his CAMPAIGN was GREAT at setting expectations - all he had to do was not drool and piss his pants and the media were primed to declare it a "win"

Debates - and this may surprise you - don't generally swing elections... as campaigns, we do them because they are expected... but the ONLY thing we think about is "DONT GAFFE" - in fact, you can only LOSE an election in a debate - never win.

Campaigns are won and lost based ENTIRELY on message and political organization.

I agree that Paul is part of the clown show, if that's the point you were trying to make. I guess we're stuck with the 24-7, media-generated, party-out-of-power debate circus for every election cycle into the future. Gawd, how I long for the days of the smoke-filled room. Seems like you usually got better candidates that way. So much for the benefits of "transparency."
Eventually, they all come around to see the world the way I do...

Still pushing the 9-9-9 plan
"The biggest comment when I ended my candidacy was, 'Keep 999 alive,' " Cain said. "And that's what this is about. The first solution we're going to promote actively is '999: The Revolution.' "

Cain continued: "The thing that didn't happen in Iowa--and it generally doesn't happen at a lot of the debates--is not enough is discussed about solutions, how you will fix things."

Cain also unveiled a new website for the endeavor with a name, CainConnections.com, that sounds vaguely like a personals site--perhaps not the most market-savvy move for a candidate who left the race with allegations about sexual harassment and an extramarital affair swirling around his head.

Cain said his goal is to get commitments from members of Congress to support his 999 plan before the 2012 election.
