Tom Heffelfinger was replaced by a woman named Rachel Palouse... a totally unqualified candidate who proceeded to turn her position in to an arm of the GOP - this isn't new or anything, but I point it out to illustrate that... the Attorney General controls his attorneys. period...
And what do you think would have happened if Mukasey had intervened and delayed the investigation and prosecution until after the election?

Are you asserting that Welch would have kept the indictment sealed until after the election, or gone public with it anyway to allege political influence?

Once Gonzalez's shenanigans were made public, the Dems had free reign in Justice to target Republicans without reprise...and they did. Doesn't change the outcome...

The Dems cheated and lied to tarnish Stevens before the election, and they succeeded. But for the investigation and prosecution, Stevens would still be in office...

Now that the corruption case against former Sen. Ted Stevens has been dropped, Alaska Rep. Don Young wants Stevens to run for governor — a move that would set up a Republican primary between the veteran lawmaker and Sarah Palin, if she decides to seek a second term in 2010.
...Young's mumbling nonsense.

The plan would have been for Stevens to win, resign mid-term, have Palin appt. a younger Republican to fill out the term and "envelope" the 2014 race with incumbency...Stevens into retirement and part of the Palin for President campaign advisers.

THAT'S why Steven's defeat was such an important goal for the Dems.

get real... the Bush DOJ was free to do what it wanted... would there have been hell raised if mukasey had meddled in the investigation... yeah... and for cause. Guilty or not (and I'm still convinced there is enough evidence to convict) there was CERTAINLY ENOUGH to investigate. impeding an investigation would still be criminal. I'm not defending witholding evidence, I think these guys should be canned.

I love Young's idea... but then... I would :)

Dems didn't "want to get young so badly"... no... we all figured he'd win... and bite the dust sometime during his term.

Stevens will be worm food in a couple years, until then he can sit in his home built with bribes.
Pulled this back up...remembering at the time, by accelerating the prosection, the prosecutor's CLEARLY targeted Stevens during an election year with the intent of affecting the balance in the Senate.

Two years later, and the Special Counsel concurs with willful, intentional, prosecutorial misconduct:

Anyone willing to wager Holder covers this up and sticks his head in the sand (again)?

Stevens was and still is, King of Alaska. I met him several times, including 2 business meetings. Good man who actually cared about Alaskans, all Alaskans. He made up for decades of Federal neglect of that great state.

His wife and kids were good folk too.
"Sarah Palin absolutely blew AWAY the audience tonight. If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. She took on Barack Obama DIRECTLY on every issue and exposed... She did it with warmth and humor, and came across as the every-person....it's becoming mroe and more clear that she was a genius pick for McCain."

Prosecutors disgust me. I know they are necessary but they are another one of those things I look at as a necessary evil.

Nancy Grace, that Kimberly Gil-foil or whatever her name is on Fox. Liz Weihl or however you spell it on Fox, other former prosecutors. I can't stand them.

To me it's another one of those professions where it takes a certain kind of person to do it and I don't like that sort of person.

It's one reason I'd never vote for Rudy Gulianni. He's a former prosecutor. Forget it. Don't want that kind of person in the Chief Executive's position.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?
