Texas Tells Feds: Shove Your Light Bulb Ban

The problem is that the Commerce Clause has been totally perverted and the Federl Government will find a way to assert jurisdiction. One way of doing it is to try simply using the series of absurd Court decisions holding that if something "affects" interstate commerce that means Congress has the authority to regulate it. Here, selling incandescent bulbs in Texas will affect interstate commerce in "acceptable" bulbs.

If the Courts can be as ridiculous as to say that the Federal government has the power to tell a farmer that he can't grow feed for his own chickens because that "affects" interstate commerce they can do something similar with light bulbs. It's ridiculous. It's not really consistent with the original understanding of the Constitution. But it's a trick that's been used to justify everything from saying Californians can't grow their own marijuana to telling employers they can't discriminate.

The other route they can take is to say that if any "ingredient" used to make the bulbs crossed State lines it's interstate commerce.

Unless and until the American People insist on making the Federal Government actually follow the Constitution according to its original understanding, efforts like this one are pointless.

What brand? I'm happy with the energy efficient bulbs that my Co-op gave me 3 years ago (and i've yet to replace). However, I don't use them where I have dimmers.

They have them now that work in dimmers, I just put some in our addition.

What brand? I'd like to check 'em out.

Asked the missus, she doesn't recall the brand name but she got them at Lowe's. Cost $15.00/pair. So far they work fine but I can't speak to longevity yet..

Clean up process for breaking an incandescent bulb: sweep or vac up, put in trash can.

Clean up process for breaking a CFL, as per the EPA:

"Before Cleanup

1. Have people and pets leave the room, and avoid the breakage area on the way out.

2. Open a window or door to the outdoors and leave the room for 5-10 minutes.

3. Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning (H&AC) system, if you have one.

4. Collect materials you will need to clean up the broken bulb:
-Stiff paper or cardboard
-Sticky tape (e.g., duct tape)
-Damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes (for hard surfaces)
-Glass jar with a metal lid (such as a canning jar) or a sealable plastic bag(s)

Cleanup Steps for Hard Surfaces

1. Carefully scoop up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place debris and paper/cardboard in a glass jar with a metal lid. If a glass jar is not available, use a sealable plastic bag. (NOTE: Since a plastic bag will not prevent the mercury vapor from escaping, remove the plastic bag(s) from the home after cleanup.)
