37 out of 40.

Actually got a twofer. Was noticing during the week on one particular sequence where my round went through the closer target and would deflect close to the second target. Started adjusting my shot. During qualifying, I was able to get the deflection to hit the further target. Hit two targets with one round.
40? When did that become the standard? The ammo shortage must have been around longer than we think.

That was back in 87. 20 rounds standing, followed by 20 rounds prone. Were you Army? That was also the time they were just thinking about having troops wear tennis shoes for some of basic. The group after ours got that treatment.

Good one on the ammo shortage. :thumb:

The active duty transitioned from the A1 to the A2 mid 1980s. Mid 90s the active duty were transitioning from the A2 to the M4, and the NG were transitioning from the A1 to the A2, getting the active duty hand me downs lol. The 20 standing/20 prone 50 tp 300 meter popup qual was the same in 95’ as I recall when I did my Basic and 11B AIT for the VA ANG at Benning. Got to my unit and they were just going from the A1 to A2. I can’t remember if I got to shoot the A1. Maybe once. I know the NG didn’t go to the M4s till sometime post 9/11 (pretty sure the 11 series MOSes deployed with M4s).

At some point the Marines went from the A2 to the A4 and then the M4..

I heard for a couple years, 2016-2018, or thereabouts, that the Army didn’t even have to qual on the M4 with iron sites.. :suspicious:

Yep. 50-300m popup is what I qualified on. On a shitty ass range as well. We practiced on this really nice range with popup soldier silhouettes and then qualified on what looked like popup tombstones.

Exact same thing happened to me. Nice range I practically couldn’t miss and got cocky. Then shitty range for the qual in hot as balls Ft Benning in August, could barely make out/couldn’t hit the little tombstone at 300 m, and missed ‘Expert’ by 1. Expert I think was was 36, and I got 35, so I got ‘Sharpshooter’.

We had issues with some targets being hit, but wouldn't drop. We did get to practice on the qualifying range and that's how we knew about it. The drill instructors were pointing it out and adjusting scores.

For the life of me I couldn't figure out why we didn't qualify on the nice range we mostly practiced on. The decision must've been made by the drill Sargeants that got caught charging rent and demoted down a few ranks! That was hilarious because the one drill Sargeant was a total douchebag.

Standing, kneeling, prone, your choice, but everybody shot from the prone position for qualification obviously

same in the 70s but 80 rounds, and you had to shoot the 50 meter targets low or sometimes they wouldn't drop. Drills told us that the early issues with jamming were caused by changing the powder.

Gotcha. Have to fix a shitty shot. That was the majority of my game, so I'm very veteran at those types of shots.

A little but it’s more about avoiding another shank as they can come in bunches.
