Re: Religion II
Sounds like you have been reading Job, Cat. Do we only worship God in our prosperity and good health and do we use our worship asa bargaining chip to get those things? '"...does Job fear God for nothing?" (Job 1:9). There are terrible things in nature and in the human spirit. Belief in God...

Re: Assisted suicide - poll
I voted no. However, I do not believe that suicide per se should be illegal. A person should be able to end his or her own life if they choose. "Assisted suicide" is a problem, I think, because it opens the door for people to push others to commit suicide, kill somebody then claim it was ...

Re: Assisted suicide - poll
The "beauty" of the posts in this thread show us that this is more than a yes/no answer. Context and circumstance do matter. There are passions on both sides and in the hospices, hospitals, nursing homes, and "dying" rooms we find ourselves. A blanket answer of yes/no will not wo...

I am trying to live out my witness within the church and community I serve and as a father and husband. I used to include arguing for the faith and seeking understanding on messageboards as part of my witness. I don't do that as much any more because of choices I have made with my time. How about yo...

I am a person of faith who does not see science as threat to my belief. It is interesting, that people tend to choose science or faith; I think it can be both: see the Einstein quote below. The bible does not tell us how the universe was created-but why. It is not a science book that people try to m...

JJ, I appreciate your concern for my son. If I did not monitor his online activity or know the influences on his life beyond the computer, I may have cause for concern. He is a typical kid in that he chooses a position and argues a point until the cows come home. I suspect that is some of what he is...

I somewhat agree and admit that my definition of Atheist government maybe more along the lines of secular or non-religious, but I don't see how a lack of a statement of faith can lead to mass murder, if government can preserve democracy and religious freedom it doesn't need a faith statement It's n...

Re: Which tactics win a debate and attract more supporters?
While it's not fair to say "all" progressives wish to control "all" aspects of everyone's lives, by definition, a Progressive seeks change, therefore changing others is a primary goal. Progressivism is nannyism: A patronizing belief in social engineering through behavior modific...

Re: Are the Constitution and the Gospel in Conflict?
Wesley never had in mind starting a denomination. The church should not be the handmaiden for the state nor the other way around. If it is true that the church should not be the handmaiden of the state, then it would not be possible for a church leader in good faith to favor forced redistribution o...

Re: Are the Constitution and the Gospel in Conflict?
I disagree with Mr. Beck's assessment of church leaders as socialists or communists. I do not "fear" those things; I do, however, have a different understanding of property, wealth, etc. All that we have is God's; we are just stewards of all of that. It sounds like that at times property ...

We disagree about Mr. Beck. Is it Mr. Beck with whom you disagree, soul man, or the founders? Do you fear the property rights and personal liberties guaranteed in the Constitution? I disagree with Mr. Beck's assessment of church leaders as socialists or communists. I do not "fear" those t...

Here are some scriptures I would like to hear your thoughts upon: John Chapter 21 15When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "...

So just to clarify, the Gospel according to Libertarian Jesus places freedom over helping the poor. Pat Robertson being the shining example. Pat could chose to help the people of Haiti but since they're poor, black, gay - whatever, he can instead continue to build up his billion dollar empire. The ...

Here are some of the social principles of the UMC from umc.org Property ¶ 163 A) Property—We believe private ownership of property is a trusteeship under God, both in those societies where it is encouraged and where it is discouraged, but is limited by the overriding needs of society. We believe tha...

Colonel, Good to be in the same thread with you again :thumb: I think the operative word is "some;" I dare say a vocal minority perhaps. As we are critical of them, I am aware there were clergy who stood with King (who himself was a clergyman) in the 60s and 70s. That was certainly against...
