I don't think it's a departure from her usual left wing stances. SALT deductions are federal subsidization of state and local taxes. They benefit people in higher tax states more than those in lower tax states and high tax states tend to be Democrat (California, New Jersey, Illinois, New York, etc.). Nancy's all for using federal government funds to subsidize high taxes in California and elsewhere.

If you don't like paying those taxes you should complain to state and local authorities, not ask the federal government to subsidize your payments.

I was fine with the tax reform that took them out - we were subsidizing bigger houses for the well-to do when the SALT deductions were allowed. It had been talked about for years that our tax code was artificially inflating the housing market, and that it was generally to the benefit of large home owners. Maybe it was too blunt of a tool to correct it, but I like that we got out of the business of using the federal income tax code to encourage McMansions in part of the country.
