Woman fired because of abusive husband

"Second-grade teacher Carie Charlesworth is out of a job, but not for anything she did in the classroom. Her school district considers her a liability and too unsafe to have around following a domestic violence dispute that happened earlier this year.

A letter sent to Charlesworth said that school officials are concerned about her ex-husband's "threatening and menacing behavior," and as a result they "cannot allow" her to continue teaching at the Holy Trinity School.

“Basically, we’d had a very bad weekend with him, we’d called the sheriff’s department three times on Sunday with him,” said Charlesworth, referring to an incident in January that put her leave of absence in motion.

She went to her principal at Holy Trinity School in El Cajon the following morning and told the principal to be on the lookout for her ex-husband. As many domestic violence cases go, this one has a trail of restraining orders and 911 calls. When Charlesworth’s ex-husband showed up in the school parking lot, the school went into lockdown."

Three months later, another letter arrived in the mail delivering a crushing blow. Charlesworth was fired for good, and after 14 years in the district not allowed to teach at any other Diocesan school.

The letter stated:

"We know from the most recent incident involving you and Mrs. Wright (the principal) while you were still physically at Holy Trinity School, that the temporary restraining order in effect were not a deterrent to him. Although we understand he is current incarcerated, we have no way of knowing how long or short a time he will actually serve and we understand from court files that he may be released as early as next fall. In the interest of the safety of the students, faculty and parents at Holy Trinity School, we simply cannot allow you to return to work there, or, unfortunately, at any other school in the Diocese."

Restraining orders.

Dude gets out of jail soon. Is it too late to put Carie Charlesworth in the 2013 Death Pool? :suspicious:

Obviously that guy might go out and buy assault weapons and then go around shooting kids at the school.

Can't be too careful or illogical in a post-Newtown America!

The Catholic Church will think nothing of spending millions of dollars and gladly absorbing massive amounts of negative publicity and lost revenue from people leaving the flock to vigorously defend a serial child rapist priest, but they callously kick this poor woman and her children to the curb. How shameful.

It sucks for the woman and her kids but it is probably in the best interests of the other kids that attend the school. What would you suggest the school do?

Work with local authorities, other archdioceses, DV resource centers, abuser intervention programs and help her with a plan. This may include relocation, heightened security, severance, help getting other employment, legal advocacy and so on - some of this is free.

In fairness, I do not know if the church has offered any of this assistance.

It seems heartless. "Hey, you know how your husband beats the shit out of you? Well we're going to compound your problems, you're fired."

We live in an age where public saftey is used as an excuse to take away rights, control people and avoid making hard decisions, in this case - to help that family at a level commensurate with their supposed mission of promoting the values of Jesus Christ.

You know I can understand the decision. Also, to me, the woman bears some responibility for the situation she's in. She got involved with the guy. She married him. Many times a woman marry an asshole then acts like you're supposed to be all sorry for her because he's an asshole. You picked him, baby.

But back to the school. You're running an operation. You've got a woman working for you. Her ex husband keeps showing up and causing crap. I can fully understand getting rid of her in order to get rid of the problem.

And, again, she DID make the decision at some point to get involved with the guy. It's not like some stalker just saw her on picture on the internet and started showing up.

I don't disagree with you and that's why I asked what the school should have done. But D1B was also right, this is a Christian school and if they want to take the moral high ground on other issues then they should do so here and "help that family at a level commensurate with their supposed mission of promoting the values of Jesus Christ."

I do think that's a little different. Look, when you decide to get intimately involved with somebody you bear responsibility for that. I think the culture is WAY too sympathetic towards women, especially, who get involved with guys who are OBVIOUSLY bad news then find themselves in difficulty become of it. Yes, you have to follow the law and you have to take action against people who physically abuse and attack other people.

But many times, most of the time I think, the women that find themselves in that position had plenty of opportunity to exercise discretion with respect to who they became involved with.

Same with men; though the society doesn't worry about that as much. I think that most of the time if you become involved with somebody who's going to have problems for you you had indications that she would cause problems for you. But your dick is hard so you ignore the indications or rationalize them.

D1B and John are both right here. The school are assholes for turning their backs on this chick. This chick more than likely knew what she was getting into with this douche. My wife's best friend married the worlds biggest douche after all of her friends begged her not to. He is one of the worst people I've ever known. And it was obvious to everyone. Of course he has made her life a living hell since. I refuse to even discuss her with my wife. That dun bass got exactly what she asked for and I don't wanna hear how fucking awful he is. :tothehand: serves her right. :coffee:
Dear lord... please allow this dangerous combination of hair spary, bat slobber, and D.O.T. four automatic transmission fluid to excite my mind, occupy my spirits, and enrage my body, provoking me to kick any man or woman in the back of the head regardless of what he or she has or has not done unto me. All my Best, Earlie Cuyler.

Good post.

However, people change too. For every skeezer you and DD can come up with who married or got too involved with an obvious dickhead, I bet you can name at least two women who married a decent guy and the guy, perhaps following the advent of kids or job loss or life change, turned into a fucking loser and the marriage or relationship went sour.

I can name 12 right off the top of my head, and for 11 of em, the guy flipped out or turned into an abusive asshole, was chronically unemployed, tyrant, lazy ass or drunk - not the woman.

DD, how many women married a trojan horse? You know a good woman marries a decent man who then turns into a drunk or a coward - cheats on her - doesn't satisfy her needs - doesn't live up to his end of the bargain - is bad with the kids - is lazy - turns to violence to win arguments....

Shit happens all the time. It's also the reason abortion must remain safe and legal.
