College grants for some prison inmates

Post by CAA Flagship »

WASHINGTON (AP) — Some federal and state prisoners could begin receiving federal student aid to take college courses — while still behind bars — as early as the 2016-2017 school year.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Attorney General Loretta Lynch are announcing the pilot Pell grant program during a visit to the Maryland Correctional Institution in Jessup, Maryland.

The Education Department says the program would be open to prisoners eligible for release — preferably within five years.

The pilot program was expected to last three to five years. The department says it has no estimate on how many prisoners would participate or how much the program would cost.

Pell grants are for low-income people and do not have to be repaid.

Congress excluded federal and state prisoners from Pell grants in 1994.

I'm all for it. They are better when they are educated. All studies prove this.

I have no problem with this. Except it'll become some massive black (no pun intended) hole, completely mismanaged by the government and completely taken advantage of by the prison/inmate system.

So you are OK with giving free college classes to a person that has behaved poorly in society over a person that has behaved properly? How about performing a job in prison to earn the access to these classes? I have no problem with providing prisoners the free opportunity to complete a high school degree (even though they may have already snubbed their noses at that in free society), but free college courses? Why not trade school? Equipment and truck operator training?

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

The "alleged" point of prison is to rehabilitate. What better way to rehabilitate than to educate?

Educate them in what? Literature? History? Philosophy? How about training them to operate equipment? You know, a skill that translates into a job when they get out.

Baby steps, Flaggy.

Besides, my guess is the vast majority of these folks would have qualified for a Pell Grant on the OUTSIDE if they weren't in prison.

First, I'm pretty sure you don't get a Pell Grant just because you qualify. There are qualified applicants that don't get them. But they might if the money wasn't going to recipients with bad behavior.

 How about we just take the money and place a bet on 23 at a roulette table? The odds are better at 1 in 38 chance of winning and a 35:1 gain.

I see both sides of the issue. But, why not give them a little help so that they don't return to crime. They don't become a drain on society.

Possible reduction in crime which will be less court cases, a smaller prison population, etc...

Of course, college should be more affordable i.e. Something that doesn't saddle you with debt.

Any education?

What if I want to get a PhD in rocket science...are you saying I should get that free? How about medicine...why can't everyone become a doctor for free? How about a lawyer...I should not have to pay to get a law degree?

Man, you are awesome.

And I bet you are going to let everyone golf for free? Everyone should be able to get out of their homes to enjoy a day on free and open land, right? It should be free because being outdoors is an important part of a healthy lifestyle...it provides a natural balance for city dwelling folks. Surely you can agree to that. Free golf for everyone...equipment and all!

And fishing should be free...no licenses needed. Access to water should be free...not drinking water...recreational water. Sorry, New Jersey, but those shore fees should be gone. No private beaches or bay front property anywhere.

Everyone would be better off with things being free.

Yup, I like where this thread is going.
