Wrong answer

Post by YoUDeeMan »

Yesterday, when I was picking up my son, one of the ladies, and one of my neighbors, started talking to me about a video that a teacher showed in my son's class.

Apparently, the video showed people's faces, and the kids were supposed to fill in blanks, from a word bank (friendly, angry, mean, approachable, etc.), to describe those people. After they selected their words, they were given more information about the people and then they were able to select words again. The video showed the people with, "unfriendly" faces as waiting 18 months for a new heart, or some other tragedy. Of course, the kids would change their word selection.

I'm OK with that. Empathy.

However, my neighbor decided to ramble on with her own pulpitude (I'm trademarking that word). She said, and I quote, "It is ALWAYS good to teach these kids something new about diversity because diversity is such a good thing, don't you think?"

Without missing a beat, I responded, "Sure, just ask the Native Americans...it worked out so well for them."

Apparently, that was the wrong answer.

I don't get all this fear of diversity. I graduated high school with one Korean, one Japanese, one Chinese, two Indians, and no Blacks in a class of 210.

As a result, I can't dance worth a shit, I don't understand half the music Andy posts, and TJ had to teach me about dapping etiquette. :ohno:

Wrong answer.

You can learn about the arts from media, books, travel or simply involving yourself in life.

Your dancing, music and etiquette shortcomings resulted from being close minded; NOT because you didn't have more minorities as friends.

I'm glad that we have Mexicans to do farm work and Asians and Indians to do jobs in science and engineering. These are jobs that Americans won't do because of how they pay. But the idea that diversity in itself is a strength…yeah, okay.

You know the #1 reason why I don't worry about world government/NWO conspiracy theories? Because the world is just too heterogeneous for it to work. Trying to create a world government would be like trying to build a house of cards outdoors on a windy day. Kind of like Iraq…that place it always going to be a powder keg waiting to explode because of all the different groups and interests in that country. Too much diversity is not a good thing.

Diversity is neutral and in your example of a world government, it's a great thing, no?

Within 10 minutes of my house, I can get authentic Thai, Korean, Mexican, and Italian cuisine. What is wrong with diversity of culture in America. As long you can choose to ignore it and not play, where's the harm? It's kind of a strength. :coffee:

Why can't we learn about it by living and working with people of a particular culture?

So where exactly is the "too much diversity" line drawn?

I'm not sure and I don't think America has quite crossed the line yet, but I don't think you can say there's no line.

Europe is probably closer to it because they have large pockets of poorly-educated, fundamentalist Muslims.

There's been a case made that the reason American democracy has survived is because of the diverse nature of it's people. I'll work the googles and see if I can find it.

It is so sad that you are not familiar with history. :ohno:

How well did diversity work for Africa? North America? South America? The Chinese? "Hey, here come some White folks! This will probably be good for us!"

Basically it comes down to, similar to today's thinking by Libs, the idea that too many White people, specifically, White men, is a cause for alarm. Hide the women and children, here come the Honky dudes! Everyone else, come on in and diversify this place. :thumb:

Anyway, I'm glad you are thinking about expanded culinary options as a reason that diversity is, as my neighbor announced, ALWAYS good for everything.

BTW, I had a wonderful professor (yes, there are some actual gems in the middle of the swath of lousy, mostly White, educators) who said that we are, unfortunately, slowly becoming homogeneous. Travel almost anywhere and you will not have to leave the comforts of home.

Go to Tenerife, and there's a McDonald's. Go to China, and they serve Pepsi. Go to a Native American Trading post, and you'll find genuine, imported Chinese knock off Canadian Indian knick knacks. :ohno:

Woo-hoo! :suspicious:

Sorry klammy, "diversity" isn't ALWAYS good. It's forced implementation can, oddly enough, lead to the destruction of individual cultures. I was recently in Koreatown, NYC...and it would be a real shame if that area was forced to change its demographics so that it reflected the rest of 'Merica.

I like a diversity of cultures...but I guess it simply takes more work to visit different places than to sit back and force everyone and every place to diversify.

No. It was something about how our melting pot of Scotch, Irish, French, German, Africans, etc.... has created a special identity along with certain struggles (or lack thereof) creating a system where there are many ideals and no one person, ideology, etc... can ever take over. The balance of power always shifts.
