Re: The Neo-Cons Strike Back
Apparently the philosophical musings of the meaning of "Neo-Con" gets CID as worked up as the idea that Conservatives get a free pass for thinking Rush is "reliable and honest" does to me...
Ah... we all have our soft spots
Hey Kalm, are you done with the Rachel Maddow DVD Box set on "How to spot a Neo-Con" yet..?

Re: The Neo-Cons Strike Back
Backpedal, make ad absurdum jokes, and circle back to McCain and Graham all you want but you are still off the reservation and your understanding of what drove the Bush admin is straight out of Kos, as is your characterization of neoconservatives.kalm wrote:Speaking of original beefs, you're taking my use of the label WAY too seriously.CID1990 wrote:Yep that sure looks like most of the Bush admin and half of the GOP
Heck, lets dont forget that first Who's Who of neocons you posted. Only see a couple of them in there now.
The neocons found a sympathetic home in the Bush admin but it was a marriage of convenience- and several of your signatories there were not and are not neocons. Youre making a fallacious argument along the lines of Republicans who voted for no child left behind must actually be liberals.
which brings me back to my original beef- that labels have meaning and if you are going to label people then you should at least have an understanding of what you are calling people. Republicans do not equal neocons. I dont know why it is so popular with liberals to invent new blanket epithets so frequently but at least make an effort to make them fit. The neocons are a very focused, specific ideological group who have found a home in the GOP but they are nowhere close to as numerous as you have asserted, and nothing you have posted supports it, either.I used it flippantly in the thread title. Go back and read the opening post where I asked a couple of more sober strategy questions basically addressing the very point you're trying to make without using the term neocon.
You sent us down this path, trying to make it out as though only Wolfowitz fit the description of neocon in the Bush administration, Cheney is not a neocon, etc. Neocons dominated foreign policy for a decade and there are still neocon like actors currently in power (McCain, Graham),and remember, Romney's foreign policy advisors included a several neocons. Then there are the conks I read on here, Facebook, and in the news who still defend Iraq, believe we should intervene abroad, want to bomb the muslims back to the stone age, criticize Obama for not being tougher regarding Ukraine and the list goes on. But none of them are neocons. In fact neocon thinking barely ever existed at all and has ceased to exist entirely today. Phew!![]()
Obama is probably a liberal too since he's definitely a neocon.

My understanding also happens to jive with what most people think, including more than few conservatives. Go back, read my opening post, and you'll feel much better about everything.CID1990 wrote:Backpedal, make ad absurdum jokes, and circle back to McCain and Graham all you want but you are still off the reservation and your understanding of what drove the Bush admin is straight out of Kos, as is your characterization of neoconservatives.kalm wrote:

It matters to me because part if the problems we have these days with polarized politics is assuming that the other side is monolithic. If you are an ignoramus then yeah- most conservatives are neocons and most liberals are communists. Understanding the other side's thinking is one key to breaking out if the political morass we are in- so it is important to understanding who the neocons are, where they come from, and who is actually an adherent to their philosophy. I personally agree that the neocon philosophy is dangerous to American interests- but the ideology is embodied in a lot of people on both sides of the aisle. The philosophy was 100% behind our Libyan adventure and yet few people on the left questioned it because it came from the left- and of course- the left cannot possibly exhibit the neocon mindset.
So while we get treated to the "conservative=neocon=republican" meme from Klam, we have a Democratic administration that brought us one ill advised adventure (Libya), and tried its best to get us into another (Syria), and all of it was okey dokey- because no matter how neocon-esque they were, it wasnt conservatives calling for it so it must be ok. (It was also used to justify Kosovo- a place where we remain to this day- where Hillary ran across that tarmac under sniper fire)
Understanding the philosophy is the key to discrediting it everywhere. Using it as a GOP epithet just excuses it and legitimizes it when others use it.
So yeah, I get irritable about it because we are going to continue to waste blood and treasure over it-
