Been mulling over the whole science vs religion debate, reading a lot this rainy Sunday morning. Now, before we begin, I am a practicing Catholic but one who struggles with faith matters but yet still can't place enough trust in science to believe that EVERYTHING I see, hear, and more importantly, feel around me and inside me just happened by dumb luck.
That being said, we read in the Old Testament, to the Jews it's their entire "bible", about the ancient pagan nations in Israel's day. Without any knowledge, I suppose since I wasn't there, one would think that the "pagans" were only acknowledging what they felt were higher beings by worshipping their gods just as the polytheistics Jews did. What made these pagans that bad? Scripture speaks of child burning and temple prostitutes, but other than that, reading history books, we owe a lot to those folks, especially the ancient Sumerian people. Just a thought.

Re: SERIOUS religious question
And another burning question for those that don't follow the Christian tenets, is it the tenets itself or the followers of Christ that turn you off more and if so, which ones? As a Catholic, I have a major issue with the protestant fundamentalists especially those who discount science and have hijacked our nation through nefarious political means? Clearly Christ, I believe, would not have supported that.

Re: SERIOUS religious question
I believe our only chance to "find God" is to truly understand how the universe works
Not stories and fables but actually understand the elements of the universe
Our only chance at that happening is through the honest application of the scientific method
Mythology and Dogma fantasy and fables seriously interfere with our discovery process
Example:
People were hanged and burned
for the simple discovery that the Earth was NOT the center of the universe
It's not about "disproving the Bible" I mean seriously: Who cares
It's about ACTUAL understanding of how things work / that is how we get closer to God
Thinking that "One Church" and one set of dogma are going to save you is pretty silly
It's like thinking that one scientist knows everything
It's not about any one particular scientist
it's about the application of the proper method and the standards of honest discovery
Fables serve a purpose / to make us feel better when we are ignorant of the facts
The scientific Method is not sentimental
Science and HONEST discovery is how we learn the Mind of God
Class dismissed

I can stomach this, but I also believe that the fables written, again, after untold centuries of oral tradition, do have merit. After all, if they didn't, why did the ancients hand them down generation after generation and so on. There's a fine line between science and religion and I believe it all comes together. I guess the journey towards that discovery is what tests my patience. Thanks chizzang.Chizzang wrote:I believe our only chance to "find God" is to truly understand how the universe works

Hey Fat Ass,
You'd be a fucking atheist if your parents didn't force feed you the christian/catholic bullshit from birth AND threaten to punish you if you didn't comply. It's that simple, Tub o' lard.
