Thought it was interesting that CNN uses the anecdote of a 24 year old woman with no college education and 3 kids. That'll really create sympathy for these workers. :?

When I was 15-early 20s I worked a # of jobs that paid $5-$6.50 an hr. TEENAGERS, HIGH SCHOOL and COLLEGE kids living at home with mommy and daddy, or at least still getting some support from mommy and daddy, don't need a higher minimum wage.

And if you're single, in your mid 20s and older with kids and making minumum wage or not much above it like the 24 yr old with 3 kids you're also getting EITC, SNAP, subsidized housing, subsidized daycare, medicaid, CHIP for your kid(s), etc, etc, etc..and should be also getting child support....

And what % of workers in this country are currently making only the $7.25 an hr minimum wage?

what THE HELL DOES COLLEGE HAVE TO DO WITH EARNING A GOOD WAGE??

Look at GMC and Ford. Most of their employes have not attended college, but make a good wage.

If you earn minimum wage you have minimum skills, minimum experience, or both.

The real reason the democrats are so -ahem- "invested" in raising the minimum wage is because many union contracts are tied to it... as in Y trade is paid at a scale of minimum wage plus X.

And what % of workers in this country are currently making only the $7.25 an hr minimum wage?
2012 Bureau of Labor statistics:
" Among those paid by the hour, 1.6 million earned exactly the prevailing federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. About 2.0 million had wages below the federal minimum.2 Together, these 3.6 million workers with wages at or below the federal minimum made up 4.7 percent of all hourly paid workers.....

...Minimum wage workers tend to be young. Although workers under age 25 represented only about one-fifth of hourly paid workers, they made up about half of those paid the Federal minimum wage or less. Among employed teenagers paid by the hour, about 21 percent earned the minimum wage or less, compared with about 3 percent of workers age 25 and over....."
http://www.bls.gov/cps/minwage2012.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Just like I thought. What we're talking about here are overwhelmingly 15-24 yr old kids and young adults making minimum wage. HS and college age. The lib media will search for these older single parents on minimum wage making it seem like its prevalent, when in fact they constitute only a minute portion of the population.

Raise the fed minimum wage and you will see unemployment among the teens and early 20s go up. Not so much in the higher cost northeast and left coast, but in the lower cost of living areas in the south, lower midwest, southwest and mtn west.

If the higher cost of living states in the northeast and left coast want to have a higher minimum wage, they can. But one size fits all for the whole country doesn't work. Heck, $7.25 an hr in some poor parts of the country is already too high, and is already equivalent to paying someone $10-$15 an hr in more expensive parts of the country.

Small and medium sized businesses are already facing the crushing burden of Obamacare. Add on a increased minimum wage that would be a double wammy. Even if they don't employ any minimum wage workers, a lot of wage scales, esp union, are tied to the minimum wage. Raise the minimum wage, and you raise wage wages across the board at some places. And for every dollar wages are raised, it probably cost employers more like $1.50 an hr once you add on accompanying payroll taxes, insurances, bennies, etc.

24-year old, dumbazz ho-bag wants more money to flip burgers so she can support her three little deductions.

She wanted to be an independent big girl and ended up spreading her legs for the thug sperm donor of the week, who is probably some other worthless, "independent" drain on the system.

Too stupid to stop after the first pregnancy, or the second, she should just idle up to Sharpton, Jackson, and Frank and ask them to personally pony up the money to take care of her kids. :tothehand:

She's a parasite...and so are her kids. Nothing more.

Those wages aren't on merit or ability. They are based on shady and underhanded deals by their wasteful unions.

1) I agree that entry level positions should be stepping stones.

2) There are many dumb/irresponsible people but we as a society still have to deal with them. Funny how often the same people who bitch about parasites and crime rates have no problem with our trade policies, cutting education, and the war on drugs.

3) I've had the fortune of employing and paying minimum wage to a number of highly skilled and educated people. Again, these are stepping stones but there are too many different life circumstances to simply paint this phenomena with a broad brush and think they're all unskilled, dumb asses.

4) Wages increase demand for services and goods.

5) Our economy, including many small businesses, unfortunately is heavily tied to services and goods.

6) Increased sex education, personal finance edcucation, job training, condoms, and workfare would help this scenario.

Lazy people infect all industries. There are lazy people with post graduate degrees. They are highly successful people with a high school diploma. You can't paint everyone with a broad brush (I think some nut up there stated that.) However, it is where perception meets reality that gives us the notion of the lazy fast food worker. Go into a Hardees or Taco Bell. Watch and listen to the workers. More times than not you will encounter slow moving, idling people that should have grown up decades ago. :twocents:

And before you bring race into, allow me: There is a local family that owns many of the Subways and Burger Kings. The white kids that are employed there, are lazy. They don't pay attention to what they are doing and it's a joke in our community that if want a surprise for dinner, just go to Burger King. You'll order a cheeseburger and get a Double Whopper with Cheese.

Oddly enough, you quoted my quote that didn't mention any of those folks...so YOU brought up Sharpton and Jackson...who still seem to have great influence in some parts of society. Perhaps you have lost touch with those folks (not surprising, you are in often denial and often out of touch with reality). In the post with Sharpie and Jackie, I mentioned Frank, too. Somehow you missed that. Wonder why. :coffee:

And increased wages lead to increased prices, which, over time, end up negating the rise in wages, most especially at the lower end. Rasing the minimum wage has never been a panacea to poverty - it's a feel good measure that, in the end, does nothing more than cause a ripple in the economy in the short term while changing nothing in the long term - good or bad. :coffee:

When I was 15 I worked a fast food job for $5.25 an hour. I knew, and most peoploe there knew, that was a career job. I took it earn money for a car and insurance. While I know hte economy is different throughout the country, you should be able to find a better job by 24 than a minimum wage job. Heck just an getting a raise alone should fix that problem. i got a raise 6 months into my job. Then I went to a different resturant and earned $7 an hour. The next part time job $7.25.

I'm just saying that I don't get how you work until you are 24 and haven't used the skills you've learned to become a waitress or cook at another resturant that doesn't pay minimum wage. Heck if I worked few years full time I'd be at least a shift manager by then.

These jobs aren't meant to be careers. You can't pay these positions $15 an hour or they will collapse the econonmy because then jobs that make $15 now will want $22 and so on down the line.

I agree minimum wage in Texas is like making more the minimum wage in NYC. But try to scale it around the country and then try to explain to the workers about cost of living differences and see if they understand.

Heck in the long run it would be cheaper for someone from NYC or DC to move to the south and pay less in rent etc.

People should be working their way UP to make more money, not the same thing and just demand more.

I would like to think most minimum wage workers are like the last two I hired: HS graduates holding a summer job to make some extra cabbage before going off to college.

We hired a young lady who is now a soph at FSU in 2012 and a young lady who just started her FR year Monday at Carnegie Mellon this year.

Both of these young ladies are superstars and we were happy to help them, mentor them, and be associated with them.... but neither of them were doing anything that was remotely worth $31.2k/year, which is what $15/hr works out to. We had them answering phones, running errands, scanning and shredding files, making copies, etc.- truly minimum wage work.

Yeah I'm pretty sure when I greeted customers and folded clothes at the outlets in college I really deserved $15/hr. Or when I was an intern making copies, proofing documents, and shipping packages I really desreved more than $9. Heck I couldn't believe they'd pay me that much.
