Boycott Applebee's

Post by bluehenbillk »

This one has D1B written all over it.

A patron stiffs a waitress from a tip, leaves nothing, claiming "I give God 10%, why should I give you 18%"

The woman takes a picture of the receipt & posts it on social media & it goes viral.

The embarassed & low-life pastor has the gall to come back & complain to the manager, and Applebees buckles & fires the waitress??

I'd give her a raise. :notworthy: :notworthy:   :thumb: :thumb:

Without knowing how good of a job that waitress did I can't say for sure whether it's justified to leave no tip.

Tips have to be earned, they are not owed. And they should be based on how many things they have to bring to and remove from your table, not how much the meal costs.

I agree...rehire the waitress and give her a raise.

The "pastor" is a typical jerk who hides behind their religion and uses it to insult other people (mind you, not everyone does that, but there are plenty who do..and they should be called out on it every time).

If restaurants advertised that their waitstaff could and would be making copies (or photos) of your final bill and the tip you left and that they would be posting online your name and the tip you left, then yes, by all means the waitress should be rehired and allowed to work there again. However, I'm sure none of us leave a tip with the expectation that we can find a record of it online in a public space until such restaurants start to tell us that will become the norm.

With that said, the pastor chick in question was an absolute dick and deserved the shaming. Heck, did she not read the fine print in the menu that says parties of six or more (as her group was) would be automatically charged and 18% gratuity? If you didn't agree to that why did she order in the first place? Dumb ass.

You should tip 15% for even sub par service. Many if not most of these places include tips as part of minimum wage. And most of them have tip sharing, so it's not as though it gets stuffed in their pockets free and clear.

I actually like it better when they just fold the tip into the cost of the meal as was done in this case. That way if you get exceptional service you can still give an additional tip. But I've never liked the fact that they underpay servers then expect you to give them a tip.

I spent my first 28 years or so very naive about the tip thing. Then when my wife was running a day care there was this one really hot mother who was a waitress and I got exposed to just how much she thought she was entitled to tips. Learned that you're some HORRIBLE person if you don't leave a tip.

I hate the whole concept unless it's a strip club.

I've actually been in the process of applying to several different places looking for a second job part-time locally. As soon as I heard about this, I contacted all of the one that were at Applebee's and told them that I was withdrawing my application. Can't work for a company that is so heavy handed with it's employees over a f******* SIGNATURE!?!? It's not like she posted a pic of her home address or phone number or anything. I could argue that because she is a Pastor of a church she qualifies as a public figure.

Reprimands I can understand, but termination? ANd then have the gall to claim that they support their employees? Apparently not.

Also it appears that they aren't to adept at handling social media PR either...

I don't know if anyone caught it, but the waitress who got stiffed was not the person fired...she showed the receipt to a co-worker, who snapped a picture of it to show others...that person then decided to post it on line...

That's the person that was fired...

Reverse utter horseshit! The tip is to "To Insure Prompt Service." But it's become a part of the servers minimum wage in many cases. I'm quite certain you're anti minimum wage so I can see why this bothers and confuses you.

Besides, how much of the time is poor service solely the fault of the server? Did it ever occur to you that the meal was late because the cooks were behind. Or perhaps the place was short staffed that evening causing your server to be forgetful or slower than expected?

If a server is rude, I can see under-tipping or leaving no tip at all in rare cases. But there's too many other variables to take a chance on the other stuff.

I take the Vincent Antonelli approach and never look back. Then again, I'm not a conk tight-wad like you and Pwns. :kisswink: :kisswink:

Wonder how much business Applebees will lose?

Applebee's cost of poor management.

Coulda written up the employee instead of terminating and this wouldn't have ever made news.

I look at the pre tax amount:
0-10+% for horrible service (and thats extremely rare)
15% for subpar service
18% for avg
20+% for good
25+% for outstanding service or if the server left something off the bill
and always round up....

Often when I'm eating out or the gf and I we for drink we sometimes just get water. So say we have a meal where we just have water to drink, and the bill is $45, but bill would have been about $50 if had gotten sodas/tea with refills or I'd gotten a beer. I'll factor that in & tip like the bill was $50.

This is exactly what I do as well. I think servers in Iowa make something like 4.35. I don't have a problem with no tip on top of the 18%,in this case. It's the note with it I have issues with
