I don't do fundraisers for any organization I'm in. I just ask how much of a donation would be the equivalent of the median person participating. I'm able to save up for these contributions by never going to church.kalm wrote:89Hen wrote: Finally somebody said it.this!

Congrats to your boy, Hen.
I made it to the semi's once, but never won.

Onward to the regionals. Flaggy warned me about this. So did one of the fathers at the pack today whose kid went last year. He said it's a loooooong day. I don't really care. I had fun today.

I'll have to post some vids. It was funny. My kid ran in the second race of the day. The two cars in the first race were shit sandwiches, as was the car he raced against in his first race. His car curb stomped the other one in his first race so bad that there were "ooh"s and gasps from the audience. I was actually nervous that he was going to dominate every race like that and people would hate us. Luckily there were several other fast cars and the races were very competitive later, usually less than a car length. My son ended up 6-0 head to head (32 participants). He won the winners bracket and then beat the losers bracket champ in the final. Each round consisted of a run in each lane to neutralize any lane advantage. He was beaten on one run in the winners bracket semi, but won the third run. So, 12-1 on the day in individual runs.

That sucks Kalm. We had very little fundraiser stuff, lots of camping trips, learned all of the knots, fire starting, wood working with safety, and very little of the arts and crafts stuff. I must have got one of the few good ones.kalm wrote:89Hen wrote: Finally somebody said it.this!

Re: Boy Scouts to release thousands of pages highlighting ab
I tried the cub scouts for a while and didn't like it. Never had any desire to continue with scouting. But I think that probably the overwhelming majority of boys that really got into it to the point of aspiring to be Eagle Scouts and such got something out of it and were never sexually molested or anything like that. And they DO, in spite of politically correct opposition, at least TRY to keep homosexuals out of being Scoutmasters.
So, D, are you willing to support them if they say that part of their effort to clean this up will be continuing to exclude known male homosexuals from eligibility to be Scoutmasters?
Me, I'm guessing part of the problem is that Scouting attracts homosexuals who also like young boys. It's a good hunting ground for them. Same reason I told my wife many times that I didn't want my kids in Church children's groups and such. There may be a lot of well meaning people at Church. But any "children's group" type of situation is going to attract predators. People that are there not because they're sincerely interested in Christianity but because the Church environment is a good hunting ground.

One of my rules, JSO, and luckily my ex is fully on board, is that our sons never go to a function without one of us physically present 100% of the time. This rule will remain in force until we feel they are old enough to guard their taints from even the most wily pedo. I really don't want to have to ever commit premeditated murder and then claim temporary insanity.

When I was a scout, cub the boy, the leader was a friends dad. At the first jamboree or whatever, I found out that 2 other friends dads were scout leaders. My parents never worried about it. On camping trips there were always 3 or more adults.93henfan wrote:One of my rules, JSO, and luckily my ex is fully on board, is that our sons never go to a function without one of us physically present 100% of the time. I'll support the kids. They'll eventually have to allow homosexuals to participate. Bought 2 wreaths and several tins of popcorn this holiday season. Also went to the governer's luncheon to support our area's council. Made a $150 donation.JohnStOnge wrote:I tried the cub scouts for a while and didn't like it. Be prepared for the need to make adjustments as the scale will be different at the regionals. Also, make sure your wheels, axles, and car dimensions are in conformance as the cars go through more scrutiny with each level.
BTW, that looks like the exact same track we used before my kids gave up Scouting. Except we put a box beneath the track near the middle to lift the track so it didn't have such a long flat run at the end (Good thing too because my car would have never made it to the finish line otherwise.

I guess it comes down to where you grew up, where you are from. It might even go down to the county level. The old Cherokee Council in NC was basically just Caswell County, and let me tell you.. one look at those rednecks populating the Boy Scouts would make the bravest pedo in the world consider moving to Iran.
Of course, Cherokee got eaten by Nathaniel Greene (they coveted our Scout camp in Yanceyville) so now we have all those Greensboro city slickers. I imagine they brought a pedo or two with em.

We followed the DelMarVa Council rules at the Pack level, so we're already in compliance for the regionals. The max weight is 5.0 ounces. We had a pre-race workshop and test weigh-in on Thursday night with our den. Our car came in at 4.99 oz on first weigh.CAA Flagship wrote:Congrats. As I mentioned earlier, our car went 12-1 in individual runs. I videoed every run and noticed in the one race we lost that the car went into a bad shimmy. I think I'm going to bring the wheels in about 1/64th" all the way around to see if I can prevent this happening at regionals. It could have also been that our graphite was starting to wear off. You aren't allowed to relube during the day. Have a look at the shimmy. Again, this was our only loss of the day in run #2 of the semis, which we won on a tiebreaker in run #3, by far the most tense race of the day for us:

Just got back from the Two Bays District Pinewood Derby. This was for the winners of the various Packs on the Delmarva Peninsula. There were 84 entries and my son placed 12th. He was 3-0 in his races. Each boy raced once in each of three lanes and they ranked everyone by combined time. He was 10.790 seconds combined for his three races and the winner was 10.713.

Hey Hen, I'm doing this right now, and I'm going to plagiarize your successful design. I'm not sure what you mean by "six of the weights were drilled through and place over the rear axle."93henfan wrote:The rules are that the car can weigh no more than 5 ounces. You obviously want to get as close to 5 oz as you can for speed. I put ten steel weights in my son's car which brought the car to 4.9 oz with the wheels and axles attached. With the internet at my disposal, I found that you want the weight around the rear axle, so six of the weights were drilled through and place over the rear axle and four were countersunk under the car just in front of the rear axle. I left the extra tenth to account for scale error. I have some steel discs I can glue on to get it right to 5.0 on race day.andy7171 wrote: My Dad had me drill holes and load it full of lead sinkers too! Is that in the builders instructions?
Do you mean you drilled over the rear axle -- on the sides of the car ... three on each side?
Re: Boy Scouts to release thousands of pages highlighting ab
Two holes were drilled all the way through from side to side. These were drilled over the rear axle. They sort of look like two fuel doors on each side, if you want to equate it to a real car. Does that make sense?JoltinJoe wrote:Hey Hen, I'm doing this right now, and I'm going to plagiarize your successful design. Then we put three cylindrical weights (I think 1/2 oz each, or maybe 1/4 oz) in each of the holes, centered as best as possible, and glued in. Then put wood putty over the holes after the glue dries and sand to the best of your ability.
Here's a closeup. The other hole is obscured by the wheel:
