Why Detroit is f***ed

Post by Trapped in CA »

Despite having no horses, the water and sewerage department for the city of Detroit employs a horseshoer.

Guess this story explains the entire culture that has lead to the downfall of a once great city. Only surprise is that this story does not cite any similar examples from CA.

This is an outrageous story, but not the reason for Detroit's downfall. Many well off cities are equally or more corrupt (Chicago, Philly etc).

The auto plants moved to the suburbs or out of state decades ago. After the 1967 riots most working and middle class folks moved out as well. The Detroit Blog has excellent stories about life in Detroit today.

I personally think Detroit will make a come back when they are able to get their fiscal house in order, and knock down or shut down the virtually abandoned areas of the city. The city needs to consolidate population and create open space which down the road can attract industry or even new housing development. Basically they need to start over.

I read stat that said thatDetroit has the highest concentration of engineers in the world- still. The city and area is ripe for re-birth. Lots of educated technical people, cheap property and many low skill workers desperate for work. Manafacturing may actually come back to Detroit, but the city must do their part to make it possible.

Detroit proper days' are in the rear view mirror. Why would anyone that is not from that area want to locate a business in that warzone? Relative to somewhere like Texas, North Carolina, Virgina or Florida - high taxes, crappy weather, closed shop (union) workforce, poorly educated workforce, logically isolated from population centers. IF you were going located a business in MI, why would anyone pick Detroit versus the suburbs, Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, etc?

A lot of things need to change before Detroit has any sort of rebound beyond a dead cat bounce.

Have you guys been to Detroit?

It's one of, if not the worst big city in the country. There's nothing that will be done in our lifetimes to bring it back to respectability...

Did you bother to read my prior post at all?

The Detroit area still has the highest concentration of engineers in the United States. (I believe I said world earlier which is incorrect)

The workforce is there. Educated for managerial and technical and uneducated for manual labor. As I said above the city has a lot of work to do, but there is potential. If certain sections of the city can be cleaned out, and tax breaks are given, it makes a lot of sense to open in Detoit. Chaep real estate, a plentiful labor market and a city and region willing to bend over backwards to make the business climate favorable.

Detroit needs a lot of work, and definitely will never be the same city it once was. But in some ways the rebound has started. The last census showed that while the city lost 25% of it's population in the previous decade, there was a 59% increase of college educated residents under the age of 35.

Why would any business go into Detroit for some tax breaks? You know that after any tax breaks are given, once the economy starts to turn around, some third generation union Lib is going to try to go back to the good old "workers unite" days and start voting in more welfare promising, tax sucking politicians and union controlled government officials.

Then your business will just have to close down again.

Simply not worth the effort. :ohno:

Ok, tax breaks was the worng phrase.

More like deep seeded changes to the way govt in Detroit is run and business is done. It wil not be easy, but it will be perhaps the first true case study of re-inventing a used up American city.

That would require electing a fiscal conservative and there ain't no WAY those government dependent, union-lovin' mofo's are ever going to do THAT.
