24 team FCS plyoff
According to Twitter, today the NCAA announced that we'll go to a 24 team playoff in 2013. As anticipated.

So how does this affect the playoff schedule, if at all? I remember a conversation on this a while back but don't remember the specifics. Is it two more auto-bids and two additional play-in games?
I guess I am ok with 24 as long as it's not going to be expanded more at a later date. I still kinda feel like 12 was the right number.

Re: 24 team FCS plyoff
It won't really affect it at all. Same number of weeks. Top 8 teams will be seeded. Four more games (8 total) will be played in the first round. Only one more autobid added, bringing that number to 11. Three more at large.EWURanger wrote:So how does this affect the playoff schedule, if at all? I don't think this really makes much of a splash, and doesn't change much. The best teams will still get buys. It didn't really need to be done, but I am not bothered by it.

I am bothered somewhat, because it just means 4 more lousy east coast patsies for mediocre CAA and SoCon teams to load up on.DJH wrote:I don't think this really makes much of a splash, and doesn't change much. I wonder if they will start letting in some teams with only 6 D1 wins in the playoffs here and there with this expansion?

100% guaranteed that 6 DI win UD would have been in a 24 team field last year.DJH wrote:I wonder if they will start letting in some teams with only 6 D1 wins in the playoffs here and there with this expansion?

That would certainly be beneficial to UNI who may have to play 2 FBS games every once and a while.

Could be worse, it could have been a SWAC teamAZGrizFan wrote:I am bothered somewhat, because it just means 4 more lousy east coast patsies for mediocre CAA and SoCon teams to load up on.DJH wrote:I don't think this really makes much of a splash, and doesn't change much. By having 11 autobids and 13 at-larges the door is still open for the SWAC to come back to the FCS playoffs...if they could talk Gram and Southern into moving the Bayou Classic to Labor Day...tampajag wrote:Could be worse, it could have been a SWAC teamAZGrizFan wrote:

Have to, or choose to? I don't intend that as smack, as it seems like you guys make some good coin from your football and BB teams.DJH wrote:That would certainly be beneficial to UNI who may have to play 2 FBS games every once and a while.

For the most part, have to. Been a huge state of Iowa budget crunch the last 5 years, and UNI has really been hurt the most by them (looong story), and they have had to make a lot of budget cuts in both athletics and academics.Grizalltheway wrote:Have to, or choose to? Playing an extra FBS game here and there is a great way for the athletic department move closer to self sustainability.

Short version of the long, conveluted, story is that the Iowa Board of Regents doesn't treat the 3 regent schools (Iowa, Iowa State, and UNI) the same.DJH wrote:For the most part, have to. They see that Iowa runs independent of state funding and a couple years ago basically demanded that UNI and Iowa State do as well - well the reason Iowa brings in what it does is the over 20 million dollars they get from the Big Ten Network....Soon after that happened the B12 about fell apart and Iowa State lucked out by the new B12 agreement that gave them an extra 20 million a year and got them off state money....
That put all the focus on UNI to do the same....because that's entirely possible
The second FBS game gives UNI 500-1M more per year that doesn't have to come from elsewhere.
