Big South RBs 2012

Post by bjtheflamesfan »

Since Im getting a late start on this I thought Id go ahead and get our second part done while logging some overtime at work

Charleston Southern

Teddy Allen 92 Rush 360 Yards 2 TD
Keelyan Bryant 34 Rush 74 Yards 1 TD

Was tough sailing for the Bucs in the rushing department last year with a pair of freshmen carrying much of the load in Allen and Bryantalong with senior Hackworth. With him gone, Allen and Bryant will lead the way hopefully taking some of the pressure off full time starter Malcolm DIxon.

Coastal Carolina

Travis Small 92 Rush 432 Yards 4 TD
Marcus Whitener 60 Rush 332 Yards 0 TD

The Chants had a three headed monster with Whitener and Small along with QB Aramis HIllary but two of the heads took a beating at Liberty with both of them getting knocked out of the ballgame. Both are back in the backfield this year so look for the three heads to get back in sync in 2012.

Gardner Webb

Kenny Little 200 Rush 1042 Yards 7 TD
Ricky Rhodes 118 Rush 553 Yards 3 TD

Kenny Little gets the workhorse award, finishing third in the conference in rushing attempts and second in rushing yards behind MIguel Maysonet (who we will talk about later). With the upheaval at QB down in Boiling Springs, the Runnin Bulldogs certainly lived up to their name, as they finished with more rushing attempts than passing attempts (332 to 282) in 2011. With no certainty at QB again going into 2012, look for Little and Rhodes as well as Juanne Blount (who finished second on the team in 2010)

Liberty

Aldreakis Allen 120 Rush 612 Yards 8 TD
SirChauncey Holloway 53 Rush 294 Yards 4 TD

It was the Mike Brown show in the backfield for Liberty but Allen and Holloway both provided enough of a complement to keep teams somewhat honest last year. With both back along with Desmond "Des" Rice, look for them to get a lot of calls while they break in a new starter under center for the Flames.

Presbyterian

Lance Byrd 173 Rush 912 Yards 8 TD (2011 Second Team All Conference)
Seth Moreland 65 Rush 326 Yards 3 TD

With Ryan Singer dismissed from the team, the load will fall on the senior with the Blue Hose also breaking in a new QB like Liberty. Byrd proved more than capable last year, finishing fourth in rushing in the Big South and joining Kenny Little from Gardner-Webb on the second team. Look for DeMarcus Rouse to get some touches as well

Stony Brook
Miguel Maysonet 252 Rush 1633 Yards 15 TD (2011 Big South Offensive PoY)
Marcus Coker 281 Rush 1384 Yards 15 TD (Big Ten All Conference Second Team)

The Seawolves reloaded in their stout backfield after Big South All Conference RB and KR Brock Jackolski graduated as All-American Marcus Coker landed on Long Island. Anyone that knows me knows I always carry a healthy dose of skepticism about FBS transfers, and Coker gets more of the same. If he plays as good as he did for the Hawkeyes last year, SBU will float right to the top of the Big South and make quite a bit of noise in the FCS playoffs, much like they did last year. Look for JeVahn Cruz to also see time when Maysonet or Coker needs a break.

VMI

Jabari Turner 21 Rush 87 Yards 1 TD
Zach Hill No 2011 Stats

The Keydets are pretty short on game experience in the backfield with their only returning rusher to see action in 2011 is the sophomore Turner. Look for a pretty wide open race in the backfield for the Roos heading into camp

Rankings

Team
1. Stony Brook
2. Gardner-Webb
3. Liberty
4. PC
5. CCU
6. CSU

2. Kenny Little, GWU
3. Lance Byrd, PC
4. Aldreakis Allen, Liberty
5. Travis Small CCU

(note: Marcus Coker did have some impressive numbers at Iowa but because he transferred I cant put him in my individual rankings because he has not played a game in the Big South)

With all 5 of SB's OL graduating, what impact do you see that having on the RB's yardages? All 5 of GW's OL are returning starters - which might entitle GW to a step up here.

Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

I dont remember our entire line graduating. Last season they were mostly freshman and sophs. So we will be fine f for sometime to come. We have good redshirts in the wings including Fernando Diaz at guard. He is from Pitt that transferred in and our center last season was also a freshman . They gained alot of playing time and play off experience. Just a note watch for a our freshman RB Darrel Hatcher. Local kid from Long Island but an Ed Gowins clone for sure. He is even built like Gowins , saw him play last October in a high school game. He can move the chains.

Really I dont see OL hurting SBU either. they have a very good back in Miguel Maysonet who can eat up lots of yards and COker played well down at Iowa. Im not anointing him first team all Big South just yet, but he has a chance to impress also. Little and Rhodes are good but I dont think that that combo is enough to top the Seawolves

Stony Brook returns 4 of 5 on their OL and all their tight ends and full backs. I don't think the SBU running game should miss a beat.

August camp will indeed be fun in Lexington. Deon Watts (Soph, 5'11, 195) has been moved from SS. Cody Shirley (5'10", 206) was a 2011 signee, tore up his knee the 2nd week of August, 2011 camp, is coming back (Since he "withdrew" before attending a class, I don't think his 5-year clock has started). Signee Ethon Preston (5'10, 202) has potential to make the travel squad right off.......when VMI employs a FB, Hardy Temoney (5'11, 223, R-Sr.) will be a key contributor; both in blocking and in swing passes. Derrick Zigler (5'11, 233, R-Fr.) will back up Temoney.

And based on their receivers returning their passing game shouldn't either....looks like another long year for the Big South Stony Brook opponents.
