They only draw, on average, 7400 per home game. That includes a record 11,702 against Montana.

Non-Montana games they are averaging about 6500.

The Apple Cup is probably bigger in Washington than anyone from outside the area realizes - much like the Iowa/Iowa State game in Iowa, Virginia/VaTech, etc...

Either way 7k wold be above average for EWU.

Its true about the rivalries, if Weber has a home game at the same time as the Holy War, Weber's attendance suffers (more than usual). or if Utah or BYU or Utah State are at home.

And its the same with basketball, if Utah, BYU or Utah State and even the Jazz are at home at the same time Weber is.....same story.

Would never happen - but, the only way we'd be able to count a home game against either one is if we played them in a "neutral" venue........like, perhaps at Qwest or something. We play UW next year at Qwest, but it will still count as a home game for them.

Gonzaga is the only other college in town and they don't have football. You kinda have the best of both worlds. Enough population with Spokane, but also the isolation to make you the only attraction on Saturdays in the fall.

Some of this comes down to marketing, etc. but there are other factors that cannot be dismissed. Saying that EWU is the only attraction around on Saturdays just isn't true. Not trying to make excuses, but it's hard to ignore the fact that there are 2 FBS schools (WSU, Idaho) within an hour and a half drive from Spokane, along with other smaller colleges like Whitworth.

I can understand why fans from smaller states where their FCS program is the only show in town might not understand why everyone in the Division isn't drawing 20k per game, but it's different when you're competing with a butt load of others schools for the same potential fan base. I understand just fine. Delaware's student body is less than 50% from Delaware. It is bascially a state school for Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Within an hour and a half of UD is Maryland, Georgetown, Howard, Towson, Villanova, Temple, Penn and Princeton. Now, many of those are not much competition, but I would hope Whitworth isn't either. UD is the flagship, but it's the flagship for a state with not that many more people than the Spokane metro area.

I agree that it takes time to build a following, but don't blame geography or other schools. Most of us have the same problems.

We do muster a lot more than a third of their attendance (except Tennessee and Georgia). We also average 1k less than Wake Forest and we average MORE than Duke.

I was listening to Patchin, Osso, and the Wingman last night (local espn radio sports talk) and they were conducting a poll of which score you will be most interested in finding out about Saturday: The Apple Cup, Gonzaga v. Illinois in the Battle of Seattle, or EWU's playoff game. The votes were pretty even, but someone texted "who would want to go watch DII football? " EWU should have the words Division I Football in all of it's marketing and should continue to promote the fact that 80% of the players are from the state of Washington.

Call it excuses all you want, but I pesonally know people who would otherwise go to the EWU game but are staying home to watch GU and the Apple Cup or taking the trip to Pullman or Seattle to attend in person. Gonzaga may not have football, but they are Spokane's version of the Griz - the region's professional team - and we lose fans to them.

The on-field product is terrific, but I do agree with past comments about the stadium. It's better, but if it looks more like a DI stadium a la permanent eastside grand stands that will help the perception a bunch.
