Week 8 GOTW

Post by siuham »

Penn (4-1) @ Yale (4-1)
Both of these Ivy teams have one loss out of conference. Yale to Albany by 3, and Penn to Top 10 Villanova by 12. Yale's wins have come close, and have yet to win a convicing game, but the Ivy is always a question mark until late in the season. Both are undefeated in the Ivy League and the Ivy championship would likely come down to the winner of this game and Brown.

Delaware (7-0) @ William & Mary (5-1)
Delaware had quite the scare against 2-4 Rhode Island, but escaped with the win thanks to their defense stepping up with a late interception. Defense has been the name of the game all season for Delaware, allowing a stingy EIGHT points a game. Not too shabby for a team that's faced two Top 25 teams on the road and another at home. William & Mary started the season slow, losing to Massachusetts after being up nine early in the 4th quarter. Since then, the Tribe have escaped close games against Old Dominion and Maine, but won a fairly convincing match-up against top 10 Villanova, neverminding the late touchdowns.

Chattanooga (4-2) @ Furman (4-2)
The Mocs have been trying to prove they belong in the top 25 all season. Their huge comeback win over Georgia Southern this week probably did it. After opening the season against two Top 5 teams in Appalachian State and Jacksonville State and losing close in both, Chattanooga has taken care of their competition, outscoring opponents 62-36 in the second half. Furman's only FCS loss of the year came against Top 25 member Wofford. The rest of the Paladins' schedule has been taken care of easily, 159-53. Furman wants to be legit, but they haven't beat anyone of note. Beating Chattanooga will do a lot for Furman's at-large hopes.

SF Austin (5-1) @ Sam Houston St. (4-2)
SF Austin had a scare last week against McNeese, but they came back strong against Central Arkansas. The Lumberjacks took care of their one difficult out of conference game, beating Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, 22-20. Sam Houston State lost to their MVFC opponent, Western Illinois, but their only other loss is to FBS Baylor. They didn't look good against the Leathernecks, but they've easily beaten their sub-par competition since, including last week's win over Southeastern Louisiana, who took down Top 25 Texas State.

Northern Arizona (4-2) @ Montana (5-2)
Both the Lumberjacks and Grizzlies lost close games to Eastern Washington in Cheney, both have bounced back. Northern Arizona took apart Top 10 Montana State at home, whereas the Griz have struggled against Sacramento State at home and Portland State on the road, along with losing to a now 4-3 Cal Poly, the Griz aren't looking like themselves this year. Any game in Missoula is exponentially more difficult, but the Lumberjacks have a lot to prove. Can Montana escape against a good team at home, or will their road woes follow them home?

I say NAU/Montana. Delaware/W&M features better teams, but UM/NAU is more important as far as making the playoffs is concerned.

You should also add that UM has won 12 straight over NAU and that the 'Jacks have never won in WA-Griz.

My reasoning as well.

@The folks I PM'd, thanks for replies, I ended up nixing both of them because neither stacked up to the bigger CAA game really.

Delaware @ William & Mary is a massive matchup this coming weekend. Man, the CAA is relentless from week to week! I'm certain there are possible seeding implications on the line for the winner of this game.

This one's starting to run away (as I expected) but I'd like to see the same numbers as last week voting.

This poll should be titled "Does CS.com have more CAA fans or Big Sky fans?"
"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"
"Yes, well, Towson actually."

I voted for SFA vs. SAM. After reading some of the posts I am now thinking that the UM vs. NAU game is the one.

Sam Houston didn't look good againgst Western Illinois. I wouldn't say their competition is subpar though. Until this week Southeastern La. looked really good. Also, SHSU has steadily improved each week. Should make for a good game in Houston!

Jacks and the Griz should be really good one. The Jack's defense in conference is giving 11.7 ppg and only 209 ypg. :notworthy:

The Griz have a good offense and the friendly confines but this should a really good game.

Delaware plays in the game of the week for the fourth time in eight games this season. Whew.

3-0 versus top ten teams so far, but this one is going to be particularly difficult in Williamsburg and with the injuries mounting on defense.

ECB would seem to be the Ivy match up.... :D

Somehow it would see, a game with seeding implications would take precedence over one with just make it in implications... :o

WTF? No Battle for the Old Mountain Jug? Are you kidding me?!?!?!?!?

Oh yeah, my bad.

I voted Chatty/ Furman because the loser would probably be on the outside looking in for the playoffs. I think UD/W&M are locks (barring some unforeseen losses).

Personally I am always more intrigued by games involving a team or two with their back against the wall. A team can lose a game with seeding implications and still make the playoffs. After all, it's already been proven that you don't need to be seeded, or even host a single home game, in order to win the NC. But a team already on the fringe can't afford such a loss. Win and you live to fight another day, lose and you go home (remaining games on the reg. season schedule not withholding, obviously). :thumb:

Agree. As much as I wanted to pick UDvWM, I went with UMvNAU for the reasons above....

My pick would be Sac State @ EWU. But since it's not listed, I'll pick NAU @ Montana. Both are big games with huge play-off implications out west. I'm being a Big Sky homer, I know. :thumb:
