What's your team's best playoff run?
For me it has to be the 1995 Griz run. Complete dominance until the NC game at Marshall where we pulled out the win.
Beat Nichols 48-0
Beat Georgia Southern 45-0
Beat Stephen F. Austin 70-14
Beat Marshall 22-20 on their home field, for the NC.
Total for the four games 185-34.

Has to be 1991:
Defeated Villanova in the 1st round on the 4th and 10 hail mary to Herb Williams to set-up Jeff Wilkins game winning kick 17-16.
Defeated Nevada on the road in the 2nd round 30-28. Their left footed kicker missed a chip shot wide left from the right hash to win it in Reno.
Defeated Samford at home 10-0.
Defeated Marshall 25-17, after trailing to the Herd 17-6 at one point.

Was that the season that your kicker went down in the playoffs and you guys had to have a back up QB or somebody kick the xp's and fg's?guinzone wrote:Has to be 1991:

I think that was Youngstown but it may have been SFA.

Definitely '97. Cruised through the season 10-1, then beat Northwestern State 40-10, beat Western Kentucky 38-21, and eventually lost to YSU (all games at Joe Albi in Spokane) 14-25 in the semis.

1992 NAIA Playoffs:
we hosted every game....
G-W 28 Concord (WV) 21 (despite 9 interceptions by our QB Craven in the game)
G-W 22 Shepherd 7
Central State (OH) 19 G-W 16 (in national title game, lost in last minute of play)

Re: What's your team's best playoff run?
I would say 1995. 11-0 during the regular season including OOC wins over James Madison (30-24), Youngstown State (31-3) and Central Florida (49-7)
Playoffs included wins over
Idaho 33-3 and Delaware 52-18.
Lost in the Semi's to Marshall 13-25 in freezing weather (for Lake Charles for sure)
Season totals included 444 points scored vs 144 by the opponents.

Re: What's your team's best playoff run?
'05 playoffs. It really was a great great run.
We had a team that really maybe shouldn't have even been in the playoffs. We were beaten by an Illinois St team that year like 35-3 mid way through the year.
But by some miracle, we got SIU in the dome in the last conference game of the year, winner took home the Gateway title. We trailed by double digits late in the 4th, and we had a great comeback and threw like a 30 yd TD pass on 4th and short to win the game, and the conference title.
In the playoffs we beat EWU in the dome with a last second FG, in a fantastic game. Then we went on the road and beat #1 in the nation UNH. Then we went on the road and defeated TXST in OT to send us to the national title game. In the title game we lost a heartbreaker to App St with a late fumble recovery for a TD.
Just a crazy great run by a team that was almost lucky to be there.

lol, it is our only playoff appearance so far. I guess it don't count as a run.

Re: What's your team's best playoff run?
For Sac State in particular, one could argue which is better: bowls (0-2) or playoffs?
Sac was 8-2-1 in 1964, when it lost the Camellia Bowl 28-7 to the Kitties. In 1968, Sac was 8-3, losing the Jr Rose Bowl to Grambling 34-7. In full playoff mode, Sac's best season (D-II) was clearly 1988, making the semi-finals (wins @ the Manure Pile 35-14 and vs. NC Central 56-7) before bowing to NDSU 42-20.
UOP was always D-I, either small college or major college, so they never went to the playoffs. The Tigers were 3-1-1 in bowls (though two of them the NCAA does not recognize) and was the only school I ever knew of that played in (and won) two bowl games in one season. UOP was 2-1 in New Years' Day bowls. Bowls: 1947 W vs. Utah State 35-21 in the Grape Bowl (Lodi, CA), W vs. Wichita St. 26-14 in the Rasin Bowl (Fresno); 1948 T vs. Hardin-Simmons 35-up in the Grape Bowl; 1951 L vs. TX Tech 25-14 in the Sun Bowl (finished 6-5!?!); 1952 W vs. Southern Miss 26-7 in the Sun Bowl. But their best season arguably was 1949 where the undefeated Tigers were snubbed from the bowl scene despite an 11-0 record and a 575-66 point differential which included four shutouts (three in a row to end the season) and a 75-0 masterpiece at Hawai'i.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

I'm not entirely sure, but for some reason Lehigh, Furman, Marge & Billy and Montana all come to mind.

1984 & 1985.
I don't recall every score but we made it through the first round both years. Lost @ Montana St. in 1984 (my last game), lost to Furman in 1985.
No playoff appearances since.

Yup, and probably only '96 Marshall can make a claim to as dominant of a playoff run as the '03 UD team had. Whooped up on both Gateway co-champs, smothered the SoCon champ, and made the title game non-competitive against the undefeated Patriot League champ (when the Patriot League was still competitive). A pretty good 4 weeks there.93henfan wrote:2003

I liked the excitement of 2005, but it was nice in 2007 beating the CAA teams, especially AE putting up stupid numbers against Richmond, and then the defense making Flacco look bad in the NC game.

I remember that Nicholls game, they were intimidated from the moment the pairings came out. Their coaches were more afraid of the weather than anything else.Ursus A. Horribilis wrote:For me it has to be the 1995 Griz run. Complete dominance until the NC game at Marshall where we pulled out the win.

But we won, right? You can't sit there and act like your big win was over a powerhouse and then belittle a close win the very next year. Weren't they at least mildly competitive the next year? Or did the defeat at the hands of the mighty Blue Hens completely deflate the entire conference?? That must be it. All hail UD!! I'm confused. Are you saying that the Patriot League was good or bad in 2003/4? You seem to be all over the place.mcveyrl wrote:But we won, right?
