Portland State's New Coach

Looks like Portland State has found their new coach to hopefully turn their program around, Nigel Burton

Im watching the press conference and he just announced that he will be running the Nevada "Pistol" offense at Portland State, about time someone ran something different besides the spread offense

If I remember from watching the ESPN pregame when they played Boise State, the pistol offense is a hybrid form of the shotgun that Ault created while at Nevada.

This will be the third different offense we've had since 2006. Fourth if you include Glanville's tweaking of Davis's offense last year. I do wish for some continuity sometimes.

Listening to Burton on one of Portland's radio sports stations today, I have to say that I am impressed by this hire. One of the things that struck me that he said was the idea that we cannot become caught up in where we think we should be. He said that the Big Sky is a very good conference overall, not just football, and we should be proud to be a member of the conference, and we should strive to be among the elite of the conference year in and year out. He spent a lot of the time to bringing up the rating to keep the scholarships up based on academic achievement. PSU lost some scholarships because we came in below the benchmark. He also said that PSU needs to keep the Portland athlete from believing that they need to go elsewhere for opportunities, both academic and athletic, specifically singling out both Oregon and Oregon State in this aspect. He holds a bachelor degree from U of Washington and a master's degree from South Florida, all the while playing and coaching football so he knows it is possible to play the game and keep your studies in order.

I have to say I am encouraged by this hire.

How is that even different? PSU lined up in the pistol formation nearly every play the last few years. The QB may have been a little further back than in Nevada's version, but the running back was still directly behind the QB as you see in the pistol.

PSU's bigger problem was stopping the pass. Unfortunately for them, that was also Nevada's biggest problem.

I think its pretty cool too, and am intrigued to see what PSU plays like with a defensive minded coach. It will be quite a change to say the least.

I like the opportunity of having a young coach (Burton is 33). He is half the age of Glanville.

I don't think that we have vaulted back near the top. I think this whole thing will take time. If he does come in and has success right away, that would be great, but based on where we ended the year, I'll take four wins next year, with a chance to improve every year. The fan in me wants a conference title within three years, but the realist in me will settle for 6-5/7-4 in three years.

They now will be running that as their base formation/only formation and that means it will be alot different from what they have run before as they will have more plays/schemes out of that formation

Leave it to a Cr@pbird to get the name wrong. Portland doesn't sponsor football. It's Portland STATE that has the new football coach from UOP.

From what I saw when the Griz played PSU the past few years, the Viks lined up in the pistol most of the time. It's slightly different than Nevada's (PSU's QB was closer to the RB, rather than halfway between), but the RB was still directly behind the QB, which is not something you see in a traditional shotgun formation.

Looking at that highlight, what PSU used seems to be a kind of shotgun/pistol hybrid. Also interesting is that they used a FB/H-Back for some of the plays in some kind of pistol/shotgun Strong-I kind of thing.

Offense will primarily be Nevada's pistol offense. Defense is getting back to the 4-3, the same style of defense Walsh ran here (Glanville went to a 3-4). Burton also said his coaches will have a Nevada and Oregon State flair to them. Recruiting will focus on the Portland area athlete (Willamette Valley to SW Washington), not necessarily the top notch recruit but those being recruited by other Big Sky and FCS programs. Many great athletes from this area have done well in the Big Sky (Lulay for MSU, Dehaze for NAU, Peach for EWU) so there is no reason PSU can't have success in this area.

I hope he has some success at PSU (just not against EWU )
