Should NDSU move to the MAC?
Should NDSU move to the MAC?
Attendance figures from the NCAA for 2008:
MAC
West:
Central mich 22,659
Ball State 19,201
Eastern Mich 18,959
western Mich 18,547
Northern Ill 18,185
(NDSU 18,032)
Toledo 17,008
East:
Buffalo 16,924
Bowling Green 15,701
Temple 15,582
Miami (Ohio) 15,435
Ohio 15,340
Akron 14,342
Kent State 10,639
MVFC
NDSU 18,032
Youngstown State 14,497
UNI 12,178
Illinois State 10,591
SDSU 9,907
Western Ill 9,624
Southern Illinois 9,055
Missouri State 8,958
Indiana State 3,885
As you can see NDSU is a good fit for the MAC and the West needs a team. We would be a strong program in the MAC. In the MVFC we are by far the largest program.
The MAC would be more lucrative too. Not only is there bowl payout money to share, MAC was in 4 bowl games last year, they get a couple teams in the NCAA too.

Definitely. You guys are at the bottom of the MVFC competitively so you may as well move to the MAC and be in the bottom of the attendance as well.

And just think...instead of competing for a real championship, you can play in the Hertz Rent-a-car/Massengill Douche Powder Bowl...

That's assuming they break the 6 win plateau, something they're not even accomplishing in the MVC right now.Col Hogan wrote:And just think...instead of competing for a real championship, you can play in the Hertz Rent-a-car/Massengill Douche Powder Bowl...

Re: Should NDSU move to the MAC?
Clearly NDSU would be near the top in the MAC as far as football attendance goes.
The won loss record is not a measure of why a team should move up. That comes and goes. UNI got beat by UND just a few years ago. NDSU was ranked #1 in this entire division just a year ago. ASU was on a run until Richmond came along and what about YSU? Thats all cyclical stuff and certainly no basis for a decision to move to the MAC.
Its about money and playing in a league that has the same type of business model you have, the same fan interest. There is not much in common with schools drawing 9,000 or less and schools drawing 18,000.
The financial rewards of the Bowl system are a big consideration. Its a better deal than playoffs.
The fans are interested in the level of competition too. It didnt matter how good NDSU was, the UNI game drew very well. With MAC teams and the ability to schedule into other major FBS conferences would certainly help maintain a high attendance in all sports and bring the day of larger stadiums closer. I dont think NDSU will ever build enough fan interest in the MVFC to warrant a 30,000 stadium. There are just too many teams in that sub 9000 attendance area. If their own fans dont care why would NDSU fans? If we are playing teams that average 15,000 or more there will naturally be more interest in Fargo.

You realize that the MAAC folded, right?
Too bad. NDSU would have been competitive with Iona and Marist.

Re: Should NDSU move to the MAC?
Seriously though why would the MAC want a team hundreds of miles west of most western outpost?
Re: Should NDSU move to the MAC?
NDSU in the MAC is really no different than NDSU in the MVFC. In addition we bring proximity to the Big 10 and existing relationships with the Big 10. We would also project the MAC presence west and have established a connection with the Big 12.
NDSU would bring the MAC media presence all the way to Fargo and beyond which would increase the MAC visibility tremendously.
Draw a cricle around the MAC without NDSU and then with NDSU. You can begin to see what marketing advantages the conference would gain. NDSU is a highly visible program. Losing aside, we bring a lot of media presence with us.

Which, as everyone knows, is the Holy Grail of media marketing.
And just what are these "established" "relationships" with the B10 and B12?
Playing a game against Iowa State and a couple against Minnesota? Man, what a connection!

What, you mean they won't let the Bison into the Big Ten or the NFC Central?

NDSU to the MAC?!?! Hahaha...
How about the school actually in Ohio and within 45 minutes of Akron and Kent, and within 5 hours of Miami, Bowling Green, Toledo, Ohio, and Buffalo?
YSU will go to the MAC before NDSU. It makes NO SENSE for them to move to the MAC.
YSU over the past 20 years has averaged more than Akron and Kent with the exception of 2-3 years.

Re: Should NDSU move to the MAC?
JBB, once again, you are overestimating.....well, everything.
Adding Fargo North Dakota is not going to help any league's recognition. And what are you talking about "established relationships with the big 10/12"? Just because you played minnesota and Iowa state? How does that help the MAC? That makes no sense.
You act as if, the fact that you guys would be playing Kent St and Miami OH is going to generate more fan interest. You really think that playing those schools is going to prompt NDSU to build a 30K seat stadium? Where in North Dakota are you going to find enough fans to fill a stadium like that?
The MAC is the abyss of D-I football, and is a terrible basketball league. Well, on second thought, maybe its the perfect place for the bison.

Why are there so many stupid "should my school move to the FBS" crap threads? Do you really think it's that easy JBB? It's probably more difficult than it appears.
You got slammed in this thread.

Right now we are an FCS school. We beat the Gophers. If we joined the MAC we would be FBS. We would have no problem scheduling Big 10 teams, much easier than it is now. We would very likely be in a bowl game with one of them. We would have one of them on the schedule every year and probably a Big 12 team too. Might even get the Gophers in Fargo. Maybe Wyoming or Iowa State?
Its a step up for NDSU. Those attendance figures I posted dont lie. NDSU should be playing in a bigger league. Right now the comparison to the MVFC attendance and the NCC attendance in the D2 days is about the same.
You play in the league of your peers. The MAC is a better fit by that measure.

Re: Should NDSU move to the MAC?
There's one problem with your idea.. actually, several, but one glaring one: You can't expand the FargoDome. They're going to carve out 4000 of those seats to accommodate visiting schools' fans, that leaves a considerable # of less NDSU fans in your own home.. plus, you know, NDSU not being anywhere qualified to be in the MAC.

Re: Should NDSU move to the MAC?
Well thats just it MrTitleist. If NDSU were in the MAC the Fabulous Fargo Dome would, in time, be too small. Probably sooner rather than later dont you think?
The reason you want your league to match your market is revenue. You want to maximize revenue to enrich the communities you are in. In the MAC community revenues would be enhanced. In the Fargo community game day economic impact for all sports would be enhanced.
It's true NDSU and Fargo/Moorhead would be on the "Western Edge" but thats not so bad and it would be worth it to the league.
