It’s sad that the parents won’t police their own kids as so many problems in this country would not exist if people would just be better parents

Maybe parents should be punished if their kids didn’t show up for school by freezing their SNAP cards

Or if a minor commits a murder, Pops does time…. If they can find him

Trump has been on a roll for the ages — but blowback could be looming
There’s a common thread running through most of Trump’s actions — whether it’s browbeating political enemies and weaponizing the legal system or forcing trade concessions out of small and vulnerable nations. He’s always assessing his leverage over an adversary and seeking to impose his personal will.

But while showcasing American might can be effective, Trump is also alienating allies who were force multipliers of US global power. What happens the next time America wants help from its friends — for instance after a 9/11-style attack? Will disaffected populations allow leaders he bullied to rush to America’s defense? Trump meanwhile may also be pushing angry allies into the arms of a new superpower — China. And his failure so far to wring trade concessions out of a Beijing that keeps dealing its rare-earth metals trump card may render his broader trade agenda hollow.

Trump’s gambles are huge and risky. Perhaps many will pay off. But history is full of presidents who misread their mandate and overreached.

If some of Trump’s most ambitious policies trigger adverse results, the coming months could show whether political gravity will assert itself.

The president is already underwater in polls. His approval rating is in the mid-to-low 40s in most surveys. And the administration’s failure to quell the scandal over its refusal to release the Jeffrey Epstein files has meanwhile exposed a split in Trump’s base for the first time.

A perilous national moment could arrive if public opinion turns sharply against Trump and Republicans seem about to pay the price in next year’s midterm elections. This, after all, is a president who believes he has almost unlimited power and tried to steal an election he lost in 2020.

Aside from the made up crisis of violence and his non-denial presser (roving bands kids on bicycles and motor bikes!) why didn’t he bring in the guard immediately on J6?
President Donald J. Trump’s big announcement today at his press conference—to which he showed up late—was that he is assuming control over the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department and deploying more than 100 agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and about 40 from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, along with officers from the Secret Service and the U.S. Marshals Service and members of the District of Columbia National Guard, “to rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor, and worse.” He reiterated that officers would clear homeless encampments from the city.

In fact, statistics from the Department of Justice show that violent crime in the nation’s capital was at a 30-year low in 2024 and, according to Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), is down 26% this year compared to the same period last year. Former undersecretary of state and editor of Time magazine Richard Stengel noted that Washington is “not even in [the] top 10 dangerous cities in [the] U.S.” Meanwhile, legal analyst Asha Rangappa notes that FBI agents are not trained to patrol the streets, and that every one of them assigned to do that is not investigating foreign spies, foreign and domestic terrorists, or crimes like fraud, murder, corruption, and human trafficking.

If that was Trump’s big announcement, the big story seems to have been something different.

Trump’s performance at the press conference—an event for which his handlers would have made sure he was at the top of his game—made it clear that his mental deterioration is moving rapidly. He let Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and FBI director Kash Patel explain the actual plan, taking the microphone himself to describe a fake world in which he plays the role of hero, solving five wars, creating a booming economy, solving the border security others couldn’t, protecting Americans from a hellscape that exists only in his rhetoric.

The administration’s seizure of power is anything but imaginary. As Stengel noted, “Throughout history, autocrats use a false pretext to impose government control over local law enforcement as a prelude to a more national takeover. That’s far more dangerous than the situation he says he is fixing.” While Trump is mobilizing the National Guard under a pretext now, he memorably refused to mobilize it on January 6, 2021, to protect the lawmakers under siege in the U.S. Capitol as his supporters tried to stop the counting of the electoral votes that would make Democrat Joe Biden president.

Ex-Capitol Police Chief Exposes Pelosi’s Lies on National Guard Deployment: ‘Long Past Time to Be Honest’

….Officials from the first Trump administration insisted that the president had made a preemptive authorization for the Guard to be on standby. Sund also says he made similar requests. In his book “Courage Under Fire,” Sund claimed that he had asked the National Guard to be placed on standby days before the Capitol protest.

He was allegedly rejected by the House Sergeants at Arms, who reported to Pelosi and the Senate Sergeant at Arms, who reported to Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

NPR disclosed just five days after the chaos at the Capitol that Sund had “requested assistance six times ahead of and during the attack.”….

Who does the DC Nat Guard report to? Were Pelosi and McConnell simultaneously denying guard assistance as they were calling for guard assistance?

Trump could have brought them in immediately. He saw what was happening and chose not to. Pence eventually did.

Pelosi’s culpability has thoroughly been debunked.

I'm not sure anyone really knows the accurate numbers in terms of female recruitment. I'll agree that the media has probably overstated the impact on females in or entering service under Hegseth, and there is certainly some truth to the need to ensure that physical standards for jobs in the military are set appropriately for the mission. But you'll also have to agree that Hegseth making a point to only fire/replace women or people of color from high ranking posts in the military, while also then publicizing religious folks who advocate for Christian nationalism and for women to surrender the right to vote, is not exactly a great look either. No one's really going to be sad if Hegseth leaves his post to run for office somewhere else. As for his effectiveness now, there are still a lot of things not great in the military, and shipbuilding/ship maintenance is at the top of the list. I know it's still early in the term, and it's a big problem, but I'd like to see some progress or ideas out there on how we're going to fix that. Let's get to it.

Well admittedly I don’t know who he fired but if so, it came from Trump

I bet those berthing areas on those navy ships are not as plush as alligator Alcatraz… looking back on it now, the berthing areas I lived in onboard some older Coast Guard cutters were horrific, some of the best times of my life!

I am a huge Hegseth fan but with the numbers of females enlisting because of him, its only a matter of time before he nails one of them and gets fired.
