Drake football coach suspends total of 14 players
Drake will be without 14 players — three starters and 11 reserves — for Saturday’s football game against Grand View for violating a new team policy that limits drinking to Saturdays during the season.
Coach Chris Creighton said the infraction occurred because of confusion over when the in-season rule would take effect. He said after Friday night’s final preseason scrimmage, some players went out for beer.

“It was after the first week of school but not a game week yet,” Creighton said. “I did a poor job of clearly reminding them that it was not (like) a Saturday night. I truly believe that many of the guys interpreted the rule that that Friday night would be (like) a Saturday night.
“Camp is camp and the season is the season. To me, that was the season. To those guys, there was some unclarity as to whether that had started or not. Nobody caused trouble, nobody was arrested. But because of their character and with the confusion, they self-reported to me that some of the guys had gone out and had a beer or two.”

ridiculous.
And FWIW, the PFL boards are indicating that the suspension is actually of 39 guys.
But yet you still suspended them? Great way to drive kids from a team.“I did a poor job of clearly reminding them that it was not (like) a Saturday night. I truly believe that many of the guys interpreted the rule that that Friday night would be (like) a Saturday night.

Agreed. When there's an obvious gray area like in this case, suspension is NOT the answer.danefan wrote:ridiculous.

It really looks stupid when you compare it to the dumbasses that have been suspended from the UNI team.

Were you military guys allowed to drink during deployments? I'm serious, I don't know. For example, if the USS Ronald Reagan is out to sea for 9 months, is there liquor on board? People smuggle green on board?

I sent a few disguised bottles of booze to my brother-in-law in Afghanistan. Him and his buddies definitely appreciated it. I have no clue whether it was allowed though.Cap'n Cat wrote:AZGrizFan wrote:

I went on deployments where one of the Rules of Engagement was NO ALCOHOL...and it was enforced...some people were a bit cranky by the end of the deployment, but everyone usually survived...Cap'n Cat wrote:AZGrizFan wrote:

My son says there is no liquer in Iraq...either tour...and that's especially true on his current tour since he's embedded with an Iraqi Army unit...he's doing OK...but he knows folks who have sumggled some in (they are taking a risk...since getting caught is a minimum Article 15 offense)
On this situation with the Drake coach...and using my military experience....if I know I did a poor job of explaining policy...everyone gets a pass....everyone gets a completely clear explaination of policy....and no one gets a pass from this point on...

Re: Drake Coach Suspends 14
Normally, American ships have a no-alcohol policy both in port and underweigh. However, sometimes operations require extended times out of port. When these operations exceed a certain length between port visits, beer days are authorized. Usually proclaimed in conjunction with a "steel beach picnic," each person on board is authorized two beers, so long as nobody is drunk on watch. It's a way to blow off steam without going into port. The command staff usually knows about the possibility in advance, so the beer is stashed on board with other provisions. Of course, not everybody actually drinks their share. Some either give them away (if they can do so without getting caught) or just go straight for the sodas. A steel beach picnic, like any other picnic, also includes soda, barbecued burgers, and anything else the ship's culinary specialists come up with for consumption topside.
