Re: Cuban Uprising
If it's great, why do we want to change it so drastically? The changes being pushed by Bernie, AOChe, et al are not tweaks, they're significant. They're the kind of changes you make to a mediocre or worse system that needs an overhaul, not the kind of changes you make to a "great" system to try and make it better. They're significant enough to risk breaking the system.

That’s a lot of MAGA-level word salad to skirt around historical fact∞∞∞ wrote:It depends on which side of capitalism you're on. You think it's great because you've benefitted from the system, but many - in the US and abroad, throughout history - have taken the brunt of it. Ultimately though, the lack of protecting democracy is what leads to authoritarianism.
I hope Cuba finds a way to restore its democracy and we should support them no matter the economic system they proceed with.
Ask the Cubans which they prefer ... the imperfect and unequal flaws of capitalist systems, or all the other stuff

So Lincoln was for gay marriage, open borders. Gays in the military. Trannys in the military. Who knew?
Lincoln in 1858:
https://historynewsnetwork.org/article/153860I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races, that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality ... I will add to this that I have never seen, to my knowledge, a man, woman, or
child who was in favor of producing a perfect equality, social and political, between negroes and white me.
Sounds like a liberal today.

They were for social justice - yes. It's ok to be ignorant on a topic. And it's cute that you think one quote represents an entire party.BDKJMU wrote: ↑Tue Jul 13, 2021 8:49 pmSo Lincoln was for gay marriage, open borders. Gays in the military. Trannys in the military. Who knew?

We've had this discussion - the platforms for the Rs and Ds basically switched in the early 20th century (truly, an ideological shift in the 1910s).
The first Republicans were for big government intervention. The party supported classical liberalism, tariffs, environmental protection and conservation, pro-labor unions (until the 1920s). They wildly expanded federal power in the late 1800s. After the Civil War, Republicans advanced legislation for social justice reforms, laws to protect blacks - all of which were opposed by Democrats who hated government interference. Does that sound familiar? They've pretty much always been anti-Immigration.
The modern Evangelical GOP didn't arise until our lifetimes (when so many of the Southern Democrats became Republicans).
Go read about William Jennings Bryant - it's all his fault.

Homeland Security chief says U.S. will not give refuge to those fleeing Cuba and Haiti by boat
Not one single peep about this from the Donks...no AOC...nothing but crickets. Why?People fleeing Cuba and Haiti by boat will not be allowed to enter the U.S., even if they demonstrate fear of being persecuted or tortured in their home countries, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas warned on Tuesday.
"Allow me to be clear: if you take to the sea, you will not come to the United States," Mayorkas said, highlighting the dangers of traversing the Caribbean Sea and the Florida Straits by boat.
Mayorkas, a Cuban immigrant who fled the island with his family in 1960, issued his stern warning in the wake of seismic political events that have rocked Cuba and Haiti in recent days.
In Cuba, large-scale protests erupted over the weekend, forming one of the biggest public demonstrations of dissent faced by the island's communist government. Meanwhile, in Haiti, the brazen assassination of President Jovenel Moise has thrown the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere into further political upheaval.

Fair...but you could also say the greatness was helped along by older progressive policies that have been threatened by under funding and/or privatization. “Significant” is relative.
And great organizations (governments, businesses, charities, sports franchises, etc.) don’t rest on their laurels. The old “evolve or die” comes into play.

Proof that open borders is about votes and ideology, not compassion. Cuban immigrants have experienced socialism and are less likely to vote for Ds than other Latino immigrants. Plus they're unnecessarily fleeing what some morons think is a good system that is better than the one they're fleeing to.Ibanez wrote: ↑Wed Jul 14, 2021 4:51 ambut but but the Boogeyman says the Donks are for open borders! Because Cubans are an easy vote for R's, the recent vids of the Commie crackdown on that island explain why.Baldy wrote: ↑Wed Jul 14, 2021 4:43 am
