One state locked down, the other didn't. I wonder how much herd immunity played into the difference. Another interesting note is that FL is loaded with retirement age folks so you would think they would have been one of the hardest hit states in all of the great USofA. Go figure.
The Covid Tracking Project’s own graphs on their website look different than this one which is sourced to them.

But assuming the above graph is true, things like testing (Florida testing 1/5 of California) voluntary social distancing among older populations, etc could help explain much of that difference.
Per worldometer FL testing is a 717k/1M compared to 819k/1M in CA. So no it's not that much of a gap due to testing. FL deaths per 1M are at 997 compared to 622 for CA. But even at that FL ranks 21st in the US in that metric, which when looking at population age should be faring a lot worse than some of those states in the top 10.

Lockdowns don't work.

So has it been decided that we should maintain our "lockdown" because of the new strain. :coffee:

Washington is getting a little bit of a bad rap here. 7.7 million in the state and the majority of the deaths occurred in the initial stages.

Not sure if anyone remembers, but Washington was THE focal when this first started.

It is what it is though.

Yep. And we rather quickly went from #1 to the middle of the pack without going back since. Unlike neighboring, maskless, and opened up Idaho.

Lockdowns work.

Idaho is at #35 in deaths/million, and WELL below the national average. Probably not the best choice to try and make your horribly flawed point.

And Washington? Well they just posted their largest single daily death # since this thing started, beating the old record day by almost 50%.

Death rate doesn't include the countless asymptomatic cases out there. Death rate of the China Virus isn't nearly as high as your list indicates.

Not sure it's been mentioned.

Incoming GOP Congressman Luke Letlow died from Covid. Was going to be sworn in on Monday.

41 years old. No underlying health conditions. Held indoor, maskless campaign events. Leaves behind 2 kids and a wife.

Died from a heart attack due to COVID complications. Had some COVID related procedure and had a heart attack after.

Interested to see what the procedure was, if they tell us.

As you know, covid reduces O2 to the heart, and lack of 02 to the heart can cause the heart to stop.

Look at the case maps. Aside from a few outliers (Cali), Covid still does really well in populated centers and/or low to no restrictions states (also see the Dakotas).

There are many factors from healthcare infrastructure to cultural influences and demographics.

Washington’s worst counties are its 3 of its most populous and the 4th (Yakima) combines the 8th most populous with large scale ag and ag processing.

The jump you mentioned also coincided with low deaths over the holiday weekend and is probably a correction since the numbers quickly went back down after.

Still images (snap shots) of golf swings also capture one moment in time and while they can be helpful in certain circumstances they can also be misleading.

Wonder if the new vaccine is setting off false positives with the PCR testing. I read an article in which they weren't sure what all of the assays were looking for, so they couldn't determine.

Obviously the genetic sequence of the spike is the genetic sequence the PCR test would have to be looking for to set off a positive and not all PCR tests look for that.

Covid Study on Ohio State Athletes.

Fox News Link

LOS ANGELES - In a study published in September, researchers from Ohio State University found that out of more than two dozen athletes from the university who tested positive for COVID-19, 30% had cellular heart damage and 15% showed signs of heart inflammation caused by a condition known as myocarditis.

After mapping the hearts of 26 Ohio State University athletes using a process known as cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), researchers found that not only 15% of students exhibited the rare heart condition but 30% showed cellular damage.

Acoording to the Mayo Clinic, myocarditis is typically caused by a viral infection with symptoms ranging from chest pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, to a negative impact on heart rate and rhythm as seen in conditions such as arrhythmias.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tweeted on Sept. 17, "Heart conditions like myocarditis are associated with some cases of #COVID19. Severe cardiac damage is rare but has occurred, even in young, healthy people."

Medical experts have previously warned the public of links between the novel coronavirus and heart damage, especially in young people.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health explained that while COVID-19 most commonly impacts the lungs as it is a respiratory illness, damage to the lungs can lead to serious heart complications.

Because the heart needs oxygen to function properly, COVID-19 can damage the lungs, preventing enough oxygen from reaching the heart muscle and further restricting oxygen from reaching other important tissues in the body.

Yes. See the Dakotas. Both are well on the downside of their latest “surge” in both cases and deaths. Meanwhile Washington’s peak occurred almost 30 days later than the Dakotas’ did, and they appear to be right about the peak of their death curve. Florida (fairly populated, with a whole shitload of old people) appears to have leveled off its deaths and case count despite not locking down or destroying their economy again. California (some of the toughest lockdown regulations in the country) sees cases and deaths continue to skyrocket.

The graphs aren’t “still images”. They’re a historical record of how states have done compared to other states.

And what they continue to show us is this: LOCKDOWNS DON’T WORK.

Chicago Teachers Union board member facing criticism for vacationing in Caribbean while pushing remote learning.

CHICAGO – A Chicago Teachers Union leader is facing criticism for vacationing in the Caribbean while at the same time claiming it’s unsafe for teachers to return to the classroom.

Sarah Chambers is on the union’s executive board and is an area vice president.

As recently as Thursday, she tweeted to rally special education teachers not to return to work Monday because it’s unsafe.

Just a few hours earlier, Chambers posted a picture on Instagram that appears to show her pool side in Puerto Rico and talking about going to Old San Juan for seafood.

She advocates for the teachers to strike if they are forced to go back.

The real irony here is that the Catholic schools in the Chicago area have been open and have shown no signs of COVID spread.

The belief that educational unions care for children is taking a beating throughout the US this past year.

(Forgets we’ve had similar discussions using Sweden, Florida, Texas...with each surge and decline)

Texas added 118,000 new cases this week. Florida 75K. Better than California but hardly on significant downhill slide. That will probably start happening at the end of February. The Dakotas are indeed a function of timing and as mentioned ad nauseam is one of numerous factors influencing case counts. Hence snap shots.

Lockdowns work...as do all preventative measures. Neither of us like the ancillary effects I just happen to value life, community, and functioning hospitals more than you. Also patience.
