No love for the final two standing last year.
No worries. Only matters where you finish not where you start.

Home opener for the Terps tonight against Holy Cross. Mrs89 and I will be there. They have an awful OOC home slate this year. Only teams worth mentioning are Notre Dame and Rhode Island. Could come back to bite them if they lose a bunch of B10 games.

I wasn't expecting going from unranked one week to #4 the next, but there you go.

Terps play their best game of the year against Marquette and move up to 3. Announcers commented on how deep they are. Turgeon can take anyone out of the game for a teaching moment and they don't lose a step.

But can he b!tch about mid-majors and then refuse to schedule them like Williams used to?89Hen wrote:Terps play their best game of the year against Marquette and move up to 3. I asked if, given that and his friendship with Jones, he might consider playing a game AT American. When Williams coached there, home games had been played across the Potomac River at Ft. Myer. Now, AU played on-campus at Bender Arena. I envisioned a packed gym and a great basketball atmosphere.
So did Williams.
“No way,” he said, shaking his head. “We could lose that game.”
Every year, about now, I think about that conversation, if only because Williams’ thinking was exactly the same as almost every single big-time coach alive: you don’t play a good mid-major on the road. Sometimes, you don’t even play them at home.
Lappas was able to use that 25-win season to springboard himself to Villanova. Seven years later, in the summer of 1999, he called Mike Brey, who had built a very good program at Delaware.
“I’m not going to lie to you or give you some weak excuse about scheduling issues,” he told Brey. “I know we have a contract to play this year, but I’m not playing you. You’re too good. If we beat you, I get no credit for the win. If you beat us, my alumni will be all over me.”

Re: Pre-season AP Top 25 NCAAM
"Every major college coach?" You should be careful when using absolutes. Just off the top of my head I know that UNI has played LSU, Syracuse and North Carolina outside of tournaments. I'm sure they've played more and I know that other mid-majors have played P5 schools. Maybe "every spineless major college coach" would be more accurate.89Hen wrote:You mean like every major college coach?UNI88 wrote:

Williams didn't just duck games against mid-majors he actually did an interview where he b!tched about their weak SOS and how they don't play anyone and his crappy Md team should make the Dance before them. His and his AD's phone started blowing up with calls from mid-majors saying that they would love to play Md and he blew them off. He's a fvcking hypocrite.

FWIW, I wasn't even a Maryland fan when Gurry was coach (I do run into him about once a month). I actually made a comment at last night's game when they showed past MD players and highlights that I wish I were a fan when they won the NC.
But yeah, MOST of the major coaches don't want to play @ mid-majors and think their team should be in the tourney over a team ranked 50-100 spots lower. Being a UNI fan, I get your resentment.

And Ohio State did the same to North Carolina - holding the Tar Holes to under 50 in a 25 point loss
The B1G won the B1G-ACC challenge 8-6
Games involving ranked teams:
#1 Louisville beat #4 Michigan
#6 Ohio State beat #7 North Carolina
#10 Duke beat #11 Michigan State
#3 Maryland beat Notre Lame
Purdue beat #7 Virginia
Indiana beat #17 Florida State

Worst opening 16 minutes of a game I've ever seen at this level. It was 16-13 Maryland with less than four minutes left in the first half. Terps were shooting 0% from 3 and I think the two were shooting 24 and 29% from the field. I'd love to say it was good defense, but it was just horrible offense.dbackjon wrote:#3 Maryland beat Notre Lame
Terps have two big road games coming up before Christmas @ Penn State (they probably should be ranked) and @ Seton Hall.

Re: Pre-season AP Top 25 NCAAM
Maryland takes a big lead in the first half at Indiana yesterday, goes to halftime up 9. Indiana unstoppable in the second and they go up as many as 8 points. Terps come storming back in the last 1:27 (down 6) and win in regulation. Big man for Terps has a career high 29 points (second time this week he broke his career high). He's normally not very emotional but he's suddenly showing emotion and after the game was "taunting" the Indiana fans to the point where Coach Turgeon went crazy on him pushing him off the court and then went IMO way overboard in apologizing.
Look, I get not wanting your players to interact with the fans, but this seemed to be a bit of an overreaction to what probably was a mistake by the player. Thoughts?

Turgeon was not amused when Smith celebrated by waving his arms and taunting the Indiana crowd.
It drew a loud crescendo of boos and two postgame apologies.
Turgeon confronted Smith on the court.
"I want to apologize for Jalen, the way he acted after the game," Turgeon said, opening his news conference. "It's very uncharacteristic of Jalen. If you know him, he's a great kid but it's one of the best fan bases in the country. Top five. Jalen feels terrible about it, I feel terrible about it. I tried to stop it when I saw it, but it's not who he is. And I want to apologize to Archie, the team, Indiana Nation or whatever you call yourselves, Hoosier Nation, we're sorry for the way we acted."
Smith added: "I let my emotions get the best of me and I apologize to all their fans. Indiana has a great crowd."
