Re: 2019-20 NHL Season
Saw an interesting stat today that quite honestly was hard to believe.
At the end of the 1981-82 NHL season, the Capitals owner was contemplating selling or moving the team. It was their 8th season in the NHL and they had yet to make the playoffs and they weren't getting good crowds.
Since the start of the 1982-83, no team in the NHL has won more games than the Caps...
Washington Capitals - 1474
Boston Bruins - 1473
Detroit Red Wings - 1468
Philadelphia Flyers - 1452
Montreal Canadiens - 1414

Re: 2019-20 NHL Season
Email I sent to some friends today at lunch...
Saw that Crosby is going to be out for 6 weeks. Vaginal surgery or something like that. This is a day after I saw a list of current players who will make the HOF. Crosby was 1, Ovie 2 (obviously both will be in first ballot).
Some food for thought….
Ovie now has one more career point than Crosby, I think for the first time since their second season in the league (remember they came in together).
When folks talk about who is the greatest, shouldn’t durability be taken into account, especially given the way the two play?
Ovie is 4th in the NHL in hits (2894) since coming into the league, behind only Dustin Brown (286 career goals), Cal Clutterbuck (119 career goals) and Brooks Orpik (18 career goals). He’d probably be higher had he not gotten those suspensions years ago. He really toned down the hitting after those. By comparison, Crosby has 711 hits all time and doesn’t even register on the all-time list.
With all that hitting, one could only surmise that Ovie would have a lot more dings and bruises. We all know that to not be the case.
Career regular season games: Ovie 1104, Crosby 960. Ovie has basically played 1.75 more seasons worth of games than Cindy.
Now, given that Ovie basically hits anything that moves and has played almost 2 more seasons of games, I would expect him to have a lot more penalty minutes... Nope.
Career PIM: Ovie 699, Crosby 665
I’m still trying to track down the PIM’s by type, but I’m guessing 99% of Crosby’s are: hook, hold, trip, slash. Have you ever seen Cindy stand up to anyone?
Ovie: 617 G and 563 A = 1234
Crosby: 451 G and 782 A = 1233
It’s impossible to find out how many of Crosby’s assists are secondary, but my guess is close to half. Did you realize Crosby is 59th in career goals? Ovie is currently 12th and only 23 goals from taking over the 8 spot.
Anyone who discounts the difficulty of scoring these days compared to the 70’s and 80’s is a dummy. Last year was the first year since 2005-06 that the goals per game average has been over 3.00 and only the second time since 1996-97. In the 80’s there wasn’t a single season with the average under 3.5 and they even cracked 4.0 one year. 0.5 per game is 41 more goals per team and 1.0 more is 82 MORE PER TEAM. It’s not insignificant.
To this end, there are only THREE players currently playing that are in the top 50 in career goals:
12. Ovechkin – 671 in 1104 career games
28. Marleau – 555 in 1673 career games
35. Hossa – 525 in 1309 career games
In fact, only 9 of the top 100 are current players. Sure, I’m a homer, but Ovie is the greater player of this generation and it aint close.

Crosby can find his name on the Stanley Cup in more places that Ovie can. And he has a lot of gold medals (Olympics and World Championship variety) as well.

Rick Chartraw has his name on 5 times. I'll let the HOF know that he is 2x the player Crosby is.GannonFan wrote:Crosby can find his name on the Stanley Cup in more places that Ovie can. And he has a lot of gold medals (Olympics and World Championship variety) as well.

Ovechkin now closer to Gretzky in goals than the person in 2nd place since 2005-06 when he entered the league.
Gretzky - 894
Ovechkin - 673
Crosby - 451

Re: 2019-20 NHL Season
A couple years ago there was a stat that Ovi had the most goals in the NHL since the 1999-2000 season even though he didn't join the league until 2005. If I did the math correct, he is now the leading scorer in the NHL since the 1993-94 season. The only other player to keep him from moving even further back in years is Jagr.

Early this fall (prior to season) I said the Caps needed to move Holtby while his stock was still high. Caps have THREE quality goalies that aren't Holtby.
So far this year...
Holtby: 18-9-4, 3.02 GAA, .899 SP... $6.1M per year cap hit and a free agent after this season
Samsonov: 12-2-1, 2.24 GAA, .921 SP... $925,000 cap hit

Just to update...
Samsonov: 14-2-1, 2.10 GAA, .926 SP (two more wins including a shutout)
Currently lowest GAA in the NHL

Anyone see the Emergency Goalie story from yesterday? Carolina lost both goalies in their game with Toronto and the designated Emergency Goalie was used.
Gotta admit I never heard of this before. I figured some other guy on the team would have to put the pads on.

I noticed that this morning. Made me wonder what the record was for earliest elimination in modern days (post expansion). Caps first year in the NHL had to be up there.AshevilleApp wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 3:42 pm Red Wings eliminated from the playoffs before the trade deadline. Things can only get better. Right? Tigers suck.
Wings really suck.
Pistons suck.
Lions have always sucked.
Sports hell.
