FCS Bracketology

One of the newbs at Sacbuzz found this in the Bison Media Zone. It's more than a little premature, but here it is. Discuss....

This is MY admittedly homeristic response. As most of you know, I've been VERY bullish about this season for Sac since the pre-season, when many of my now-excited Hornet compatriots were much more pessimistic. This may well be going beyond the pale, but I'm feeling quite greedy right now.
I'm not so sure about that. First, that arrangement is going to hinge VERY much on the outcome of Sac-BBQ. Second, BBQ gets the better part of that arrangement, IMO, given the top of each half of the bracket (I don't think there's any dislodging NDSU or JMU from the top two spots before the playoffs start).

Then again, we've powered through much such adversity so far this season, so perhaps we can do it again....

Based on THAT particular arrangement, though, I think I could foresee the following (being admittedly VERY homeristic, since that's how I've been since the pre-season):

Play-In Round

Nichols > Pat Summitt U.
Wofford > SHSU
Delaware > Lehigh
Griz > U of San Diego
IL State > Austin Peay
UNI > Kitties
SEMO > Furman
Towson State > C CT

Sweet 16:

#1 NDSU > Nicholls
Wofford > #8 UCA
Delaware > #5 Villanova
#5 Sac State > Griz
IL State > #3 SD State
#6 BBQ > UNI
SEMO > #7 Kennesaw State
#2 JMU > Towson State

Elite Eight:

#1 NDSU > Wofford
#5 Sac State > Delaware
#6 BBQ > IL State
#2 JMU > SEMO

Final Four:

#5 Sac State > #1 NDSU
#6 BBQ > #2 JMU

National Championship:

#5 Sac State > #6 BBQ

I doubt very much they'd put the four CAA teams in a position to meet in two second round games. They usually split them up a little more than that. It's those little details newbies often don't know.

Is that a CAA thing, or is that a standard thing? It makes a TON of sense when you don't seed the entire field. Heck, it makes a ton of sense even if you DO seed the entire field....

The biggies... CAA, MVFC, BSC... they often will have first round match-ups, but not two games encompassing all four teams. They will stick one of the 4-5-6 teams in a different bracket.

The OVC, SLC, and SoCon are a mess with a high likely hood of some cannibalization. EG: UTM plays SEMO, JSU, and APSU the next 3 weeks. There should be a few 8-4 teams not getting in.

Keep an eye on Albany and UIW.

It seems like half the subdivision could finish 7-5 this year.

Assuming that will take 8-4 to get in, no chance in hell that UD and Towson both get in, JMU gets the # 2 seed, and VU gets the #5.

For JMU to get the #2 and VU to get the #5, they would both likely have to win out.
That would mean JMU gives TU a 4th loss this Sat, and VU gives UD a 4th loss Week 13.
But UD is @ TU 11/2 so the loser would have at least 5 losses and likely wouldn’t get in.
TU is also @ SBU 11/9, and hosts Elon 11/23. UD also hosts SBU 11/16.

Looking at the CAA teams with 4 or less losses, I can’t come up with any plausible scenario where more than 3 end up with 4 or less losses. Whoever put this together didn’t analyze the schedules..

Good stuff BDK. :thumb:

Question: Either Sac or Weber win out with no FCS losses, top 10 SoS, and two close games against FBS. Either would also have wins against 3-4 playoff teams and maybe another ranked opponent who doesn’t get in. Wouldn’t they have a shot at leap frogging at least one if not two of the top 3?

Yes if its:
NDSU 12-0/8-0
JMU 11-1/8-0
SDSU 10-2/7-1
think SDSU would bump to #4 in that case.

No if its:
SDSU 11-1/8-0
JMU 11-1/8-0
NDSU 11-1/7-1 (unless NDSU got soundly beat by SDSU, which I doubt)

For the Big Sky to get a top 3, think either need:
-SAC or Weber to win out (duh)
AND
-NDSU to beat SDSU
OR
-NDSU, SDSU or JMU to lose one of their last 4. Its 50/50 at best IMHOP that the 3 teams go a combined 12-0 in their last 4 games each, JMU starting this Sat & the Dakota schools 11/2.

5 weeks left. Still a slew of seed scenarios that could happen.

I’m not sure how we avoid expanding it further with the everybody gets a trophy generation coming on line

The 8 first round games all available through streaming now is like Christmas. Glorious sit on your ass and watch football from all across this great land.

32 would be great. New matchups, more teams motivated by their first taste of the post season, potential for more upsets, more football.

The Football Championship Subdivision title game is heading to network television.

According to the NCAA website, the 2020 title game will be televised by ABC on Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. Central time. The game has aired on ESPN2 since 2010, when the date of the game was moved to early January.

Just have the entire season the playoffs. Losers drop down to the participation bracket and winners are scheduled against one another probably by geographic location until the brackets are down to the playoff size bracket of 26 teams. If there are no longer 26 teams undefeated reach into the participation bracket for the next best.

I dont know how it would actually work, maybe there arent enough weeks but that is the maximum number and if we are to strive for total inclusion its the only path. Of course as long as they kept winning Bison would have home field.
