Whether they put people in concentration camps or the gulag is irrelevant to Fascism, Communism or National Socialism ... it is a commonality, not an identifier

Fascism, like Communism, is an economic model, and that is how they are defined (literally)

Fascism is private ownership + state control of industry.

Communism is state ownership + state control of industry

All else are just historical manifestations of how these systems have behaved, but if you want to differentiate between them you have to look at the economic model (because in all other ways they are the same - they require coercion to function)

Exactly.

People sometimes use "fascist" or "communist" when they mean "totalitarian"

You can't see similarities between Antifa and the Brown Shirts?
Perhaps a few but the brownshirts originally formed to throw leftists out of Nazi Party meetings. Then as earlier mentioned the Nazi party absorbed a large number of the disenfranchised working class, many of whom were socialists. As we've seen with Trump followers, populism exists on both sides of the aisle.

Plus, the brownshirts were far better organized than antifa. I think antifa is mostly anarchists, a recent version of the 90's kids who protested the WTO. I'm not sure they'd have the smarts, discipline, or guts to become as successfully violent.

So if the police put an Antifa riot down hard, who do you think will be upset about it?

That’s a rhetorical question

We all know who their apologists are

I honestly don’t know who their apologists are. I don’t think they’re quite as popular. I’ll be mildly concerned when/if their numbers reach 1% of the SA/SS at their peak.

Who suggested anything about their numbers?

Huh? That’s not a very good comparison.

Here’s the “isms for dummies”:

Nazism, Communism, Fascism ... place personal human freedom and liberty as a tertiary concern

and all three of them will throw you in jail, or a camp, or will disappear you altogether if they hold political sway and you make the mistake of questioning their political hegemony

Coercion is their lifeblood. Without it, they do not survive

All three (and their offshoots and derivatives) are inimical to liberty... you surrender varying degrees of it in direct proportion to how far you dip your toes into them

On the RIGHT
Under the banner of Nationalism we get the off shoot called Fascism

On the LEFT
Under the banner of Communism we get the off shoot Authoritarianism

At their philosophical core Communist Authoritarianism and Nationalist Fascism
do a full 360 and bump into each other at the insane fringe
But they philosophically see each other as complete opposites
and originate from completely different language and different ideological fundamentals

The fact that they end up becoming insane grotesque mirrors of each other is a different conversation

Because at their point of ideological origination
Their embryonic psychological formation point
a Nationalist (Nazi) and a Socialist (Communist) see themselves as complete opposites

The bottom half of your post is good but the top half needs a little work. As CID pointed out Fascism and Communism share many characteristics but differ from an economic perspective. Nationalism is not a right (or left) wing thing. I can exist within a communist and fascist state. Authoritarianism is not a left (or right) wing thing. It's about dictatorships and how much authority the central government exercises over peoples lives. If memory serves the US government used to call allied dictatorships authoritarian and enemy dictatorships totalitarian.

Again-

The one thing that you MUST have if you want your fascist or communist government to succeed is Coercion with a capital C

If you arent willing to incarcerate (or kill) people who vocally oppose what you are doing, your fascist/communist utopia never gets past adolescence

You might initially come to power democratically but you'll never stay there democratically

I believe my original question/statement was about antifa's tactics being similar to fascist tactics. Antifa uses intimidation and violence to try and silence those that disagree with them. Are you arguing that those aren't also fascist tactics or that antifa doesn't use them?

My bad. Yes, I agree their tactics of violence and intimidation are ironically similar. Especially when they are the aggressor.
