The Worstest Generation?

Post by kalm »

Drum roll please......

That's right...it's the Baby Boomers! :D

Interesting notion and tough in some ways to argue with based on the raw facts. Fairly aloof, selfish, and semi-responsible for creating the millenials who everyone wants to bash.

I'm Gen X and never really cared much for my generation but I think we still have some time to clean up the mess left over from the boomers.

What generation are you? Is this a fair assessment?
How the baby boomers — not millennials — screwed America

Bruce Gibney

The baby boomers are conventionally defined as people born between 1946 and 1964. But I focus on the first two-thirds of boomers because their experiences are pretty homogeneous: They were raised after the war and so have no real experience of trauma or the Great Depression or even any deprivation at all. More importantly, they never experienced the social solidarity that unfolded during war time and that helped produce the New Deal.

But it’s really the white middle-class boomers who exemplify all the awful characteristics and behaviors that have defined this generation. They became a majority of the electorate in the early ’80s, and they fully consolidated their power in Washington by January 1995. And they’ve basically been in charge ever since.

Sean Illing
So how have they broken the country?

Bruce Gibney

Well, the damage done to the social fabric is pretty self-evident. Just look around and notice what’s been done. On the economic front, the damage is equally obvious, and it trickles down to all sorts of other social phenomena. I don’t want to get bogged down in an ocean of numbers and data here (that’s in the book), but think of it this way: I’m 41, and when I was born, the gross debt-to-GDP ratio was about 35 percent. It’s roughly 103 percent now — and it keeps rising.

The boomers inherited a rich, dynamic country and have gradually bankrupted it. They habitually cut their own taxes and borrow money without any concern for future burdens. They’ve spent virtually all our money and assets on themselves and in the process have left a financial disaster for their children.

We used to have the finest infrastructure in the world. The American Society of Civil Engineers thinks there’s something like a $4 trillion deficit in infrastructure in deferred maintenance. It’s crumbling, and the boomers have allowed it to crumble. Our public education system has steadily degraded as well, forcing middle-class students to bury themselves in debt in order to get a college education.

Sean Illing

What’s the most egregious thing the boomers have done in your opinion?

Bruce Gibney

I'll give you something abstract and something concrete. On an abstract level, I think the worst thing they’ve done is destroy a sense of social solidarity, a sense of commitment to fellow citizens. That ethos is gone and it’s been replaced by a cult of individualism. It’s hard to overstate how damaging this is.

On a concrete level, their policies of under-investment and debt accumulation have made it very hard to deal with our most serious challenges going forward. Because we failed to confront things like infrastructure decay and climate change early on, they’ve only grown into bigger and more expensive problems. When something breaks, it’s a lot more expensive to fix than it would have been to just maintain it all along.

Good article. I enjoyed this quote
This is a generation that is dominated by feelings, not by facts. The irony is that boomers criticize millennials for being snowflakes, for being too driven by feelings. But the boomers are the first big feelings generation. They’re highly motivated by feelings and not persuaded by facts. And you can see this in their policies.
My parents are Boomers (1950). I was talking to them on Saturday about some family stuff and mentioned that if I could buy the medical office my grandmother had, it'd be a great investment as it was for my grandparents. I told them our plan to have real estate be our retirement b/c Social Security won't be there and they asked me why. I was honest, I said Boomers have robbed it. Their reply : We payed into it and there are a lot of us. I had to remind them that it wasn't the paying out of SS to recipients that was the problem, it was the Boomers using SS as a slush find for everything else.

It's up to Gen X and Millennial's (the oldest millennial's are now 35/36 yrs old) to vote out the Boomers. The Millennials got the numbers a few years ago but enough of this Boomer crap. They aren't going to be around (or aware) in 20-40 years and there are more Millennial's then there are Boomers or Gen X.

I agree with the premise, to fix the problems, we'll need a mix of serious cuts and taxes. However - I don't see that happening. I especially don't see any of the these Democratic Socialists cutting anything.

Given everything to them on a silver platter, stole from their own children, and want to burn the entire thing down on the way out. Their enduring legacy will be a lesson on how not to run a nation.

As a whole, definitely the most selfish generation too. You see it on here all the time from the Boomers - all they care about is themselves and their family...the rest of America be damned.

Facts be damned too. It's all about their snowflake feelings.

edit: I definitely don't intend for SS to be around when I'm retired.

Only about 1/3 of working Americans have 401K accounts and less than half of employers offer them.

And you typically have to be educated or be part of a Union to get a job with a 401K.

Do not agree. Every generation has pluses and minuses. I really do not see much different between their generation and the ones to follow. Passing the buck or blaming somebody else for the mess is just par for the course with us humans. :coffee:

Boomer

The last 4 presidents were boomers, Clinton, Bush and Trump all born in 1946, Obama 61. All lived thru the Vietnam era, none really served. Many of the kids in my hometown, wondered if they would grow up to fight in Vietnam, and several of the older ones did. Civil Rights improved more during the lives of the Boomers, than any other generation since Lincoln. Still plenty room to grow though. The generations that think it's bad now, should look back to the history books, with all the lynchings, separate bathrooms, hotels, schools etc. Plenty of riot footage to view from that era. I really don't think it's a generational thing, it's a government that continues to grow. Yes, FDR was part of the expanding government.

And the cult of individualism? Guess that's why there are so many retirement communities and other Senior groups around the country. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs did some wonderful things, that has led to uniting people around the world.

55% have access to 401K accounts, 38% have 401K accounts, 31% of those that have access are not participating.

As of 2017 – the most recent year for which data are available – 56 million Millennials (those ages 21 to 36 in 2017) were working or looking for work. That was more than the 53 million Generation Xers, who accounted for a third of the labor force. And it was well ahead of the 41 million Baby Boomers, who represented a quarter of the total. Millennials surpassed Gen Xers in 2016.

While the Millennial labor force is still growing, partly due to immigration, it is unlikely that the Millennial labor force will reach the peak size of the Boomer labor force (66 million in 1997). The Census Bureau projects that the Millennial population will peak at 75 million. At that number, a high rate of labor force participation would be needed to reach a labor force of 66 million.

I concede. You are correct that the birth of the 401k was not the result of Boomers.

But the population bubble of the Boomers is what will kill the SS model. Fortunately, Boomers have participated well in 401k's and have benefited greatly. I am all for SS payouts based on need going forward.

We'll have to even though some of us had either selfish Boomers or apathetic Gen Xers for parents.

I think some of the criticism against our generation is warranted. We aren't perfect and I know the entitlement (which isn't solely a millennial quality) is partly to blame.

Btw, who gave us those participation trophies? Some kid problem whined, like they had done throughout history and some boomer/gen X soccer mom decided everyone deserved an award. :ohno:

Ted Benna isn't a boomer. He was born in 1942.

401(k) is section of the tax code that was inserted in 1978 but not effective until 1980 and the 1st 401(k) savings plans came online in 1981.

No, the 401(k) tax code was created in 1978. The first plans weren't until 1981, a year after the 401(k) tax code was effective.
