Me perosnally? Of course not. But I understand the school's situation. Like I said, in Kalm's school they'd all wear uni's. Probably some off-take of prison attire.89Hen wrote:Would you ask somebody to change a shirt with this image?
Year's ago, my business partnered with a church and held an annual Easter egg hunt. The school district agreed to hand out fliers to all the kids for us. We printed up hundreds of copies and they called us back and said we had to strike the name of Easter from the flier. I was floored until they explained the threat of a lawsuit from non-christians (gawdamm pagan/atheists!)
I didn't like it. Thought it was ridiculous. But I understood.

School unforms are the best thing in the world. No worries about who has what brand, being made fun of by your clothes at school, etc.. That said, there is a down side. When 89Henette went to college, we had to spend a TON of money on cool season clothes. She was at school so long each day, she really didn't have a huge need for regular clothes. Cost me a ton at the outlets that summer.

That said, I also don't think it's a strech to believe that the boy may have been intentional in his presentation, again because of his family background.

You keep saying that, but as I said, I'm not convinced it was unintentional. If not unintentional, it wasn't misinterpreted.Ibanez wrote:shame on him and his family for not thinking how the clock could be misinterpreted.

Why do you think it was intentional? What is there for him to gain? To highlight the weak security of his school?89Hen wrote:You keep saying that, but as I said, I'm not convinced it was unintentional. Remember, my financial future is in the lap of A-B. And I am sacrificing a great deal because of it (cough, cough, St. Louis). So common sense would lean towards my financial future......one beer at a time.

Not that I necessarily liked being there but schools were much cooler places when I was a lad (graduated from high school in 1975). Every once in a while I thank God (if he's out there) for allowing me to come of age back then instead of now.
Though it would have been cool to have the personal computers, devices, the internet, etc., back then.
On balance though I'm glad I got to be a kid back in the 60s and be a teenager during the 70s.

I think this kid brought this gadget (which was an electronic clock with the cover removed.... he didn't build it - he took the cover off an existing clock) to school with the intention of getting a rise out of school officials
when he was questioned about it he became intentionally coy and evasive
This kid got exactly what he and his father wanted and more- to prove a point about "bigotry against muslins" based on the reaction
and they got an unexpected invite to the White House from President "They Acted Stupidly If I Had A Son Trayvon Sure Wish I HAd Advisors Who Would Tell Me To Keep My Mouth Shut"

I don't often agree with you, but I do here. HS Class of 1978. We actually hung out in the woods and made/found our own fun then. Things change though, and parents adapt as they see fit.JohnStOnge wrote:Not that I necessarily liked being there but schools were much cooler places when I was a lad (graduated from high school in 1975). They did this in some middle schools in Charleston County when I was with CPD (I was in the school resource unit for two years).AshevilleApp wrote:I live in Liberal Asheville, and hear this from parents quite a bit. So far only one school is trying it, but I expect to see more.93henfan wrote:

The idea was that making all the kids dress the same way cut down on distractions and dress code violations (which usually meant skirts too high, blouses too low or saggy shorts).
The results were actually pretty good, but I didn't care much for the fact that it penalized kids (and parents) who normally follow the rules. That's a familiar refrain for one size fits all rules that we are so in love with in this country.

Re: Boy Suspended for Shirt w/ a Gun Image
The way it works in our district, for boys anyway, is that shirts must have collar and button (ie golf or polo) and must be one of four colors: maroon, gold (the school district colors), navy, or white. Bottoms can be shorts or pants; no jeans. No restriction on shoes.CID1990 wrote:They did this in some middle schools in Charleston County when I was with CPD (I was in the school resource unit for two years).AshevilleApp wrote:

Kids can still wear their favorite brands if they want, within the rules above.
Edit: I was pretty much correct. Here's the dress code -
