2022 WNFC Playoffs

Some crazy playoff football in the WNFC today. Some tight scheduling, too, as the winners today have to play again in the conference championship games on Saturday.

Some really bad sportsmanship at the end of the 1-4 game in Carlsbad today. At the end of an upset, a defender from the previously undefeated #1 San Diego Rebellion (6-1) literally frog splashed #4 Utah Falconz (4-3) quarterback Sara Galica as she was taking a knee to close it out. Naturally, she was called for it, which prompted at least one SD coach (and possibly TWO) to get tosses with a minute left. What a pathetic way to end an otherwise hard-fought game.

That was the only game I saw (via Vyre Sports online). Vyre isn't all that reliable, by the way. The TX-KC game has no video whatsoever; it's hard to figure out the score just from the audio. The Vyre broadcast featured Dr. Jen Welter, the first woman to coach in the NFL (Arizona Cardinals) and the first woman to play a non-kicking position in a professional men's game (she played RB, despite playing her entire career as a LBer) for the Texas franchise in the IFL, GMed by Raider legend Tim Brown), but I was shocked at how pro-San Diego she was on the broadcast. It was really bad.

Anyways, the scores:

Western Conference
at Carlsbad (CA)-Army Navy Academy

2 Denver Bandits (7-0) d. 3 Las Vegas Silver Stars (4-3) 19-14
4 Utah Falconz (4-3) d. 1 San Diego Rebellion (6-1) 23-15

Eastern Conference
at Neptune Beach (FL)-Fletcher HS

2 Atlanta Phoenix (7-0) d. 3 Alabama Fire (3-4) 7-0 OT
1 Texas Elite Spartans (7-0) d. 4 Kansas City Glory (4-3) 34-14

The IX Cup Championship pairing is set after today's Conference Championship Games. These ladies should be commended for playing two compete games in three days. Not even the NFL has done that since the '20s, and these ladies don't get paid; they have to pay their own way. That's got to change.

Pacific Conference Championship
at Carlsbad (CA)-Army Navy Academy

4 Utah Falconz (5-3) d. 2 Denver Bandits (7-1) 20-14

Atlantic Conference Championship
at Neptune Beach (FL)-Fletcher HS

1 Texas Elite Spartans (8-0) d. 2 Atlanta Phoenix (7-1) 30-10

IX Cup Championship
at The Star, Frisco, TX (The home of the Dallas Cowboys)

4 Utah Falconz (5-3) vs. 1 Texas Elite Spartans (8-0)

Where have you been, GF? I've been posting about the WNFC, the WFA, and the (unfortunately defunct) IWFL for years. The WNFC is the Women's National Football Conference; the WFA is the Women's Football Alliance, and the IWFL was the Independent Women's Football League.
