The league has trademarked the names of the former Los Angeles Express (Steve Young), Chicago Blitz, and Jacksonville Bulls, so there may be some expansion to other old USFL cities, and perhaps the end of consolidation should COVID concerns lessen.

Former Browns QB Kyle Laluletta was drafted 7th overall by the Pittsburgh Maulers in the 2022 USFL Draft. He was one of the final cuts as the Browns got down to a 53-man roster.

Watching the Birmingham-Houston game on FS1. Houston was up 18-13 at the half, but almost quit in the third quarter before getting their mojo back. I was surprised to see Birmingham's touchdown that put them up 26-18; it came on a sweep left from about 18 yards out. They were aligned in something that I could only describe as a Pistol-Straight T. I've never seen that before, but it sure worked.

Birmingham is now up 33-28 in the 4th....

One play after a double pass for a touchdown, the other team pulled the most botched flea flicker I've ever seen, but it somehow worked. The 3 tech got in to stuff the dive, so the pitch back to the QB was on the ground. The outside defender had time to get in and almost sacked the QB, but he somehow got it off to a SE on a fade to the left. The CB was on him like a glove, yet the WR caught it anyway and scored.

One game left after Week 7. Two teams have clinched playoff spots. Just about everyone else is still eligible for the remaining two spots, though the path for SOME of them has drawn extremely tight. We had the first overtime game of the year last night, and it was the stupidest OT rule I've ever seen: using two-point conversions to substitute for penalty shots in a soccer/hockey-style shootout. If you want to reduce injuries related to playing an extra period, why not just go back to accepting the tie?!?) FYI: it appears that NBC has given up all pretense of "covering" these games, as all games assigned to them are now relegated to either USA or to Peacock streaming. At least Fox is still pushing it, with very few games getting relegated to FS1; most Fox-assigned games are actually broadcast on Fox.

North Division

New Jersey Generals 6-1 3-0 152 118 W6

Birmingham just clinched the South and the 1 seed with two games left, yet they're struggling to close games out. It would be easier if they'd consider ditching the Pistol, returning to the I, and running the triple. They have a mobile quarterback, and should use that advantage to the hilt.

Incidentally, New Jersey's Luis Perez seems to be the epitome of the modern no-guts quarterback with more faith in his arm than he has in himself. They were going for two last night, and while it would have been contested, he had a better chance at continuing his roll-out into the end zone, but chose to force it into double coverage at the back of the end zone. That's one of the things that drives me N-V-T-S, nuts! about the way people play football today....

Next week's games will be at Protective Stadium. The regular season will close out the week after that at Legion Field.

Todd Haley ought to be fired. He just made the biggest strategic mistake I've seen in a LONG time, and it cost Tampa the final game of the season. I understand what he was trying to do, but he went about it in the wrong way. Knowing that Birmingham was going to be super hot today, he sat his place kicker to get an extra skill-position player on the field. That ended up being a HUGE issue, as they blew the convert on all three touchdowns they scored. THAT was the difference in the game, the last game of the regular season, as Tampa Bay lost to Birmingham 21-18. What would have been a better way to handle the heat? Sit the PUNTER and have the QUARTERBACK punt. He would have had the same extra player, he would have had a guy qualified to kick extra points and field goals, AND he would have left Birmingham in the quandry of dealing wondering if the punter was actually going to punt; any defense that forgets that the punter is ALSO the quarterback does so at its own risk, something Danny White made defenses pay for a LOT. The best example was White's 48-yard run from punt formation against Green Bay in 1980 after the Packers completely forgot about him. If you want to be a head coach, you had better know your history along with your strategy; it might well give you ideas with which you can beat the competition....

Houston was called for an illegal crackback block tonight. Blame the coach. It was literally in the play call that was broadcast through FS1's live mike.

Another innovation that shouldn't have happened. That and that stupid drone. Someone's gonna get hurt, and the league and the network are both going to get sued....
