2020/21 Olympics Thread

Post by SuperHornet »

Thought I'd start a new thread to separate the actual Olympics happenings from pre-Olympic discussion.

First off: the USA Women's Water Polo team set a couple of big records...only to watch them go away a few hours later. USA destroyed host Japan 25-4 to set records for both goals scored in one match and for point differential. Unfortunately, both of those records were soon subsumed by Spain's big 29-4 win over South Africa.

Wow....

Two of those US goals were actually own goals scored by New Zealand. I've never heard of that at the international level before.

The East German and Soviet judges seem to be out in full force in the gymnastics competition. I'll admit that I'm no expert, but solid routines that look to be anywhere in the 9.5 to 9.95 range are getting scored in the high 7s and low 8s (execution). Most of it SEEMS to be anti-US, but I've actually seen it happen to EVERY non-Communist Bloc athlete. What gives?

The way was prepared for that with the Big3 CBS has been showing for the last couple of summers. The difference, though, is that for the most part, Big3 has been all about bringing aging stars some more airtime. Dr. J and Rick Mahorn are HCs....

Was reading that viewership was about 17 million for the opening ceremony, down about 36% from 2016 (which was a 35% drop from 2012). Guessing that the 13 hour time difference was a large portion of it and maybe just overall declining interest.

NBC did say that it's streaming service is up overall though. Probably a good indication that people are picking and choosing what to watch rather than watch from start to finish like in years past.

The Russian's are pissed they cannot compete as a country (no anthem or flag) due to their program getting caught doping. This is their way of showing their displeasure.

I'm loving the Olympic Channel - it's basically like watching the NFL Red Zone - they only show the highlights from things (like 5 seconds of Judo rather than watching a whole match) and you get to see who's medaled. Takes about 3 minutes for a segment and then they move on to the next sport. I mean, 3 minutes of air pistol is pretty much the maximum amount of time I'd like to spend on air pistol.

Indeed. Or just watching the interesting parts on YouTube.

Sports viewership in general is in decline - too many other options. Back in the day when we were young (as least some of us) you had your four or five channels and the Olympics were by far the best viewing on.

Still, the main NBC channel continues to draw out everything and haven't changed their model in years. Still the same saying an athlete is about to come up, go to commercial, come back and show a lengthy backstory on that person, go to another commercial, and then come back and showing them compete. And when it's on tape delay it's even worse since you know what's going to happen. I wonder who actually sits through all of that, and clearly it's less and less people every Olympics. Things get a little boost when the time zone works for American viewing (and they do shuffle events the US is interested in to fit the time zone better). I like the ways they show sports on the other NBC channels, much more viewers under the age of 80 friendly.

YouTube TV is great for watching olympics. You just select what sports you are interested in and it will dvr everything on those sports. Then you can watch exclusively the sport you want. It doesn’t matter what channel it’s on, it will automatically record irrespective of what channel it’s on if you select by sport. Of course you can always watch live (whatever live means) but why would you do that? If you feel like watching all the ping pong matches, choose the ping pong tag and you can watch nothing but ping ping. If you just want to watch the final 1500 freestyle race, select only the 1500 freestyle final from the swimming list and only watch that. If you want to see all the preliminary and semifinal heats, choose that. And it’s all dvr’d in the cloud for you to watch whenever you feel like it. I should be done watching sometime around Christmas.

I just look at the medal count on the Internet once a day. :coffee:

I mean if the fucking Russians cheated/doped so much, why didn’t the IOC just ban them instead of permitting them to win medals under an assumed name?
